Does anyone seriously believe that the United States would condemn itself to certain nuclear destruction if Russia decided to attack Finland? Of course not.
In that situation Finland would simply be a small distant country that could be left to its fate. Just as many other nations have been before.
I cannot understand the desperate urge of Finland’s political leadership to hand over such fundamental security decisions to a foreign power that has spent decades demonstrating disregard for the fate of distant nations.
Nuclear weapons are weapons of mass destruction. They have no rational purpose unless the country and the people from whose territory the launch takes place are prepared to suffer the same nuclear devastation in return.
At the same time, we would have little understanding of the immediate military danger the United States could place Finland in.
There is no benefit to Finland in this.
Not if nuclear weapons are never brought here. And not if they are brought here during a real crisis.
The movement of nuclear weapons is always extremely secretive.
Once legislation restricting nuclear weapons is dismantled, Finnish parliamentarians will no longer have real influence. They may not even know what kind of threat could be directed at Russia from Finnish soil.
There has been a major debate in Finland about dismantling the legislation that bans nuclear weapons. Here are my thoughts.
The Defense Cooperation Agreement (DCA) between the United States and Finland allows the Americans to bring their weapons into Finland.
