Our friends @c4tf.bsky.social have a new report examining the true levels of wealth inequality in Canada, and it's impact on our democracy.

One shocking stat: billionaire wealth grew 37.2% between 2023 and 2025 while total household wealth only grew 9.3%.

The rich in Canada are, indeed, getting richer. Here are 3 things we can do to fix that When world leaders, including Prime Minister Mark Carney, descended on Davos, writes the authors, the most pressing economic challenge in the world was not on the agenda — rising inequality.

“Extreme wealth inequality is too often treated as an inevitability — it’s not.

It’s a policy choice, and one that our federal government continues to make every day that our tax code remains the same.”-Emma Davis writes with @oxfamcanada.bsky.social’s Lauren Ravon

"[Ordinary people] protect their neighbours, even if it brings the state’s wrath to their own doors.

Meanwhile, for the country’s wealthiest, it’s a race to the bottom of the boot to see who can provide the most thorough tongue bath."

Enjoyed talking with @clementnocos.bsky.social for @patmillscanada.bsky.social about why cutting taxes is not the way to encourage investment or entrepreneurship, why even the wealthy want to tax the rich, and why billionaire wealth flight is an empty threat.

So many of the big global problems addressed at Davos are symptoms of an ignored one: extreme and ever growing levels of wealth inequality.

Our tax code currently guarantees it will only grow (and grow faster).

But it can be a tool to constrain it, and fund the fixes to its trickle down impacts

Excess profits tax on obvious price gougers is a good place to start, but our whole tax code is currently designed to guarantee the growing gap between the top 0.1% (or 0.01%) and everyone else will only accelerate.

Reform capital gains. Tax wealth. Fight tax evasion.

Oxfam calls out Loblaws and Save-on-Foods amid price increases Two of Canada's richest grocery store owners got significantly richer in 2025, according to a report published Monday.

Chatted about how we can use the tax code to reduce grocery price gouging!

But the explosive wealth growth of the Weston and the Pattinson families aren't unique. There has been universal massive growth in billionaire wealth while average Canadians struggle.

In Davos, the rich talk about ‘global threats’. Here’s why they’re silent about the biggest of them all | Ingrid Robeyns Economic inequality is at the heart of all humanity’s major problems, but the wealthiest refuse to confront a system that benefits them, says economist and historian Ingrid Robeyns

Government leaders, executives, and heads of state are in Davos for the annual World Economic Forum, which purports to be a discussion place for the world's biggest challenges.

But they're missing the most important one: extreme wealth inequality.

For the record: Canada is also a country with a massive amount of oil, and Trump has already spent significant time blaming Canada for drug problems in the US, so I don’t know why any Canadian leader with an ounce of critical thinking skills would cheerlead this.

Scrap the SS income cap
End 1031 exchanges

Bit too late but still a surprise!

Perhaps the government should wonder whether the largest tech company in the country actually wants innovation, growth, and entrepreneurship? Or whether they’d just like to stay on top of the pile and line their own pockets?

"Canada should not race the U.S. to the bottom with tax credits, but position ourselves as the country where talent can take risks, where families experience genuine long-term security, and where investors know domestic demand will be stable and growing. That is our competitive advantage."

Why Canada’s proposed corporate tax relief is not the answer Tax cuts are not what motivates investors or entrepreneurs, they’re not what creates jobs, and they undermine the things that do.

Straight from the mouth of founder and investor @floydmarinescu.bsky.social:

Corporate are not what motivates investment or entrepreneurship, they undermine the things that do, and historically have never worked.

So why try and tax credit our way to prosperity?

I hear the first class cabins are perfectly adequate!

It's time for the wealthy to ask themselves: Do they want to be rich people in a poor country?

Or do they want to be rich in a country with great healthcare, education, and infrastructure where everyone has economic security and the opportunity to thrive?

If it's the latter, they should join us!

Our tax code values money over sweat.

It values already being rich over earning a paycheck.

It values unproductive and even extractive investment more than actually working for a living.

Until that changes, the tax code will guarantee wealth inequality in this country grows.

‘Self-termination is most likely’: the history and future of societal collapse An epic analysis of 5,000 years of civilisation argues that a global collapse is coming unless inequality is vanquished

Through 5,000 years of human history, the same cycle repeats: Elites extract huge amounts of wealth and power, a small oligarchy makes poor decisions in their own short term self interest, and what's left of society collapses.

Can we learn from those mistakes?
