Only really heard in the remoter parts of Yorkshire these days, sad to say.

But 'gormless' is possibly still North Yorkshire's favourite put down, and, characteristically, can be the friendliest or the harshest criticism.

It's possibly a vanishingly small consolation, but pretty soon, just as you're able to eat, you are going to have the most amazing sense of smell.

Confidently posting such a sentence shows how wonderfully in our own cycling bubble we are.

Things I wish I'd known...

β€œAs early as 1866 the Linguistic Society of Paris specifically banned discussion of the origin of language as being altogether too disruptive for the contemplative atmosphere of a learned association.” (Ian Tattersall in the ever-brilliant @nybooks.com mail)

The UK’s rightful place is at the heart of Europe. Let’s return.

Thread to remind us all that we're supporting authors & publishers as well as libraries just by giving a book a home for a while for free.

Do it.

Being busy as an academic back then. Sitting in your working spacing (here it's the Initial "G"), wearing your thinking hat, doing scientific stuff with instruments (he's measuring), and forgetting the world outside (in this case a page in Latin about geography). The year is 1523. #academicchatter

Homepage - Public Books Think in public.

There's a new look at Public Books! We’re debuting a brand-new website (we can’t stop looking in the mirror), and a redoubled commitment to the goal we’ve had since the very start: creating a classroom the size of the world.

Fot all its beautiful #etymology, th word 'eel' somehow evokes th darker, slipperier connotations of th thing it names.

If we'd stuck with 'fenn-fysche,' now, we'd surely have had a very different relationship, keeping them as pets and bragging about them to impress our friends at dinner parties.

The UK government didn't want you to see this report on ecosystem collapse. I'm not surprised | George Monbiot It took an FOI request to bring this national security assessment to light. For β€˜doomsayers’ like us, it is the ultimate vindication, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

Please spread this far and wide, as stories don't get much bigger than this. When the government blocks even the intelligence services from telling us we're heading for environmental catastrophe, you know we have a problem. A very big problem.
Thank you.
