One key recommendation is to enhance the understanding of rapport building and interview tactics used in non-interpreted settings. Learning from how signers build rapport and formulate questions could greatly benefit interpreter training.
We also explore the use of pointing by interpreters, which can indicate speakers and signal shifts in communication style. While helpful, these cues may disrupt rapport between the suspect and officers.
In our observations, we noted instances where interpreters added information to clarify police questions, supporting rapport building. However, these actions can sometimes veer into coercion, underscoring the expertise required to maintain trust. ⚖️
This case study highlights a BSL/English interpreter's role in a police-suspect interview within the UK’s cognitive interview framework, emphasising rapport building and non-coercive measures. Interpreters are essential in facilitating communication, often unpacking meaning to aid understanding.
