This book was written so that you might learn. In order to learn from it, however, you must know how to use it properly. The book will teach you little unless you put organized effort into reading it, for active, directed work is necessary if you wish to understand and remember what you read. Careful, intelligent reading of this book will mean that you understand better what you learn in class. What is equally important, if you have studied this book properly in the first place, it will serve as a convenient and quick refresher for future reference. Nearly everyone knows that we easily forget what we learn when we do not use it. What many students do not realize, however, is that we can relearn what we have once learned, providing we have learned it well in the first place. Thus, this book provides a convenient auxiliary memory that can serve you all of your life.

In order to understand and remember the contents of this book it is essential that you do more than read. It means that you must actively recite, question, and review the material you have read. See the reverse of this card for suggestions that will help you to study this book. By following these suggestions, you will find the book will be more valuable to you both the course in which it is assigned and as a part of your permanent library.

BOOKMARK
How to Get the Most Out of a Book

1. Skim through the assigned reading so that you will know what it is you are to study.

2. Read the text carefully. Do not forget that many important ideas are presented in graphs, diagrams or maps.

3. As you read, stop now and then and recite to yourself, in your own words, the important ideas in what you have just read.

4. Make brief notes in the margin. These will serve as cues for subsequent self-recitation.

5. Mark important or key passages for later review.

6. Review the material at least once between the first time you study the assignment and study for exams. Make use of your marginal notes as cues for self-recitation.

7. Remember that a little relearning is necessary each time you wish to use what you have learned for an examination, a related course, or for independent study. If you use the author's headings, marked passages, and brief notes for cues it will help you relearn easily.

8. Coordinate what you read with what you learn in the classroom. Keep well-organized lecture notes. Lecture notes that are legible and accurate will, like your text-book, serve in the years to come as quick and inexpensive keys to the knowledge that you are acquiring.

Yesterday, I was reading a used book from 1959 I bought some years ago, and I found this bookmark, which must have been there when I bought the book.

Given the age of the book and Deese at Johns Hopkins, the bookmark would be from the 1960s. Useful advice to students even now.

I said it first, and I am glad my colleagues are finally following suit. Noem’s day in public office are numbered. Either she will resign, get fired, or be impeached.

A montage of black and white midcentury advertisement art including: a skull wearing a crown, a little girl praying, a woman putting a finger to her lips and making a thoughtful expression with a ? next to her head, and another woman making a very frowny face while holding in front of her a mask of her own face making a very manic expression. A speech bubble coming from the little girl contains mismatched typography reading, β€˜Maybe it will happen today’. This is all on a toned paper background and make to look crumpled and worn.

It seems impossible that anyone saw Fight Club and forgot the soup scene.
It seems impossible that any ICE agent hasn't seen Fight Club at least twice.

I must conclude that all ICE agents know and accept, nay, embrace! that 100% of their prepared foods come with a little something extra.

It does terrible fucking things to your mind if you stop getting feedback like "dude what the fuck are you talking about?"

Just look at how literally any billionaire speaks.

Chicago Fire stadium at β€˜The 78' faces opposition ahead of groundbreaking The Chicago Fire plan to break ground on a privately financed stadium in coming days, but concerned community leaders spoke out during a news conference Monday.

--β€œAs the plan stands today, there will be zero changes to the existing public transportation infrastructure. No new bus, no added service, no El-stop,” Tang said.--

Well that's clearly not okay, the biggest attraction about this site is that you can plug transit into it so neatly!

I have to believe that Trib did her dirty by including that ridic quote, because OBVIOUSLY there needs to be, at minimum, CTA bus service to/from the studio.

--β€œIt's for rich people. It's a playground for developers, for the soccer team to bring up their yachts and come see a soccer game,” said Sarah Tang--

Yeah that's how it works, the players (but no fans?) arrive in yachts to watch… the…other players??? do a soccer game

And then anyone at all born immediately before the second person’s death, then living to see the coming 250th anniversary, and we have three people who between them personally witnessed the entire history of the United States up til now.

Not so long, eh?

Say there was someone born on the day the US is considered to have begun, and who lived to be 102, and then someone else born a month before the death of that first person, who then lived for a month or two past the celebration of the US centennial.

Something I think about lately is that when I was 20, WWI seemed a very long time ago. Yet it doesn’t, now, in my late 70s.

The US is turning 250 this year.
