I wonder if other digital painters start off more clean and only incorporate heavy texture into the drawing once all of the base shapes are down?

I've been doing some paint studies and struggle a lot with incorporating texture.. I don't wanna just slap a texture map on top of the image. I like to get creative with brushes, but it's difficult to sculpt shapes when heavy textures quickly make things messy and hard to read
