Who is it for? Executives who insist on driving downtown or the broader Toronto population? There's so much the Board of Trade could advocate for, but the task force was flawed from the start considering who they installed on it. Heavy on CEOs rather than people who dedicate their careers to studying traffic solutions, it included an executive from Uber, a company with a history of rolling roughshod over municipal regulations with a direct interest in getting people to choose them over, say, public transit. Studies also show companies such as Uber contribute to congestion by flooding the city with vehicles waiting for customers. The task force also included two executives of Purolator, a company that has been among the top parking violators in Toronto in the past.

The Board of Trade is not a serious organization considering who was on their task force.

The only game in town: How better regulations can foster competition and choice for ride-hailing in Toronto In this edition of Open Mind Economics, I’m teaming up with JJ Fueser with RideFair, a sustainable transportation not-for-profit, to talk about monopoly issues for ride-hailing services in Toronto.

Fresh off the press, economist Robin Shaban and my colleague JJ Fueser collaborated on a piece on Uber in Toronto.

MORE REGS are needed to FOSTER COMPETITION to benefit consumers and workers.

Crack open that regulatory moat created by the City!

Wow. Square this with the $6.37/h the average Uber driver gets paid by that company in Toronto.

Uber threatens cutting off drivers if NYC increases minimum pay | amNewYork Uber says it may effectively lay off thousands of New York City drivers if the Taxi & Limousine Commission decides to raise minimum pay standards.

If Uber cannot afford to pay its drivers minimum wage, there is no socially necessary reason to keep that company around.

That simple.

Ban it.

Have someone else step in to provide that service and pay at least minimum wage.
