the idea that making art is embarrassing if you don't do it well enough to make a career out of it is an objectively harmful and toxic brainworm.

As we enter the New Year remember fear of making bad art is holding you back. Fear of people not liking your work is holding you back. Rejection is holding you back
You'll make bad art, you'll have people not like your work, and you'll be rejected. Moving past it is half the job of being a creative
"You shouldn't make art for the money" buddy I'll take it one step further and say we shouldn't have to labor for capital at all but in the meantime pay an artist
EVERYONE GET MORE PASSIONATE AND SELF INDULGENT ABOUT CREATIVITY AND BEING HUMAN NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'd get a new laptop, then the rest will most likely go to my cats' food fund 🤟
This is actually quite brilliant, up to and including the final sentence 🔥
gAI art is bad because it's stealing labor.
stealing labor from art is easy because no one sees art as labor, they see it as talent.
they see it as talent because it's easier to believe they have a right to hate you because they can't stand they gave up and you didn't.
fuck them, pay labor.

As an author, I don't make a whole lot of money, but at the same time I need to read a lot of books to stay aware of trends and support my fellow authors. Obviously if I spend all my profits on other people's books, I'm not coming out ahead!
So: ways to read lots of indie books for cheap.
Tweet from Jesse Hamm (@Hamm_Tips) reading "Somewhere out there are people who need to hear a story you're uniquely able to tell. Art by others, even better art, won't do; only yours."
Opened Twitter for the first time in a while just to dig up this tweet of theirs I adore
cinema_nasties 1d Al defenders are so embarrassing j.paulmonter 2h All you are saying is that you want to gatekeep creativity. That's not good. drachelbarr & 20h • •• Neuroscientist here... creativity is a process. A process. A FUCKING PROCESS. Not an output. Nobody is gatekeeping the process - Al simply invites you to skip to the end, to the output. Which, as mentioned, is not creativity. Nobody cares if the output is aesthetically pleasing, because the process, the act itself, the limitation of a single human mind and the resulting creations that capture that one single inimitable human experience... is what makes a creation worth paying attention
Well put by @drrachelbarr.bsky.social
AI advocates have warned that if every author in the class action filed a claim, it would "financially ruin" the entire industry.
A small black and white comic. The comic shows me in four stages. At the beginning I am lurched over in my office chair, prepared to work hard. A speech bubble says: 'Okay. Time to lock in and-.' My cat's head is peeking up from around my lap. In the second part, my cat has started to crawl into my space. I look down at her, but am still distractedly saying: 'Time to lock-' In the third part my cat is starting to make herself comfortable on my chest, where she likes to be. I am succumbing, looking off in the distance saying: 'To-' By the fourth section, I have fully surrendered. She is sleeping on chest. It's all over.
Meme: a quirky hand-drawn cat beneath the script "AHEM - please don't give billionaires more of your money this holiday season - buy something cool and handmade from some fun weirdo instead & help them eat. Shop small, y'all." Image credit: "Small businesses need your support more than ever 💗 By Sugarhouse Ceramic Co."
Love this so much. 💜
This year has been exhausting for all creative people and it's normal to feel burned out or unmotivated, because the daily grind is consuming us. But be kind to yourselves, get plenty of rest and come back whenever you're ready.Your mental health goes first

I finally feel well enough, mentally, to start working again. Then I saw my to-do list with items from AUGUST!
So now, I'm back reading fanfics. 🙂↕️
Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.
Someone's screenshot of a two-post twitter thread, from user blue (@bluewmist): the fastest way to kill motivation is to make your identity depend on the outcome. it's called ego involvement. when failing becomes failing as a person, your brain starts avoiding the whole thing. not because you don't care, but because you care too much. you don't need lower standards. you need less self-worth tangled up in your goals. the work gets easier when it's not about proving who you are.
Found this on the AO3 subreddit, and I'm about to let it change my whole life (or at least work really hard to internalize it wrt my writing).
"They're trying to convince people they can't do the things they've been doing easily for years - to write emails, to write a presentation. Your daughter wants you to make up a bedtime story about puppies - to write that for you." We will get to the point, she says with a grim laugh, "that you will essentially become just a skin bag of organs and bones, nothing else. You won't know anything and you will be told repeatedly that you can't do it, which is the opposite of what life has to offer. Capitulating all kinds of decisions like where to go on vacation, what to wear today, who to date, what to eat. People are already doing this. You won't have to process grief, because you'll have uploaded photos and voice messages from your mother who just died, and then she can talk to you via Al video call every day. One of the ways it's going to destroy humans, long before there's a nuclear disaster, is going to be the emotional hollowing-out of people."
This. Is. Why. I. Paint.
Just a reminder to check for your name in this list of books that OpenAI trained from. If your name is there, they probably owe you several thousand dollars.
OpenAI cried that if everyone eligible author files, the company will go bankrupt, so I'm alerting every author I have ever spoken to.
A three-panel comic. In the first panel, a simple humanoid figure is shown, seated and writing on a piece of paper. They are smiling, and the words above their head say, "Enjoying hyperfixation". In the second panel, they have dropped their pencil in shock. They look rather distressed and seem to be dissociating. Large red letters read: "I AM SO CRINGE" In the final panel, the humanoid figure has gotten over their existential crisis and is back to happily writing on the piece of paper.

People posting about how they’ve never seen em dashes used before the rise of ChatGPT are really great at telling folks they’ve never read a book before.
Writers should never modify their own prose as a reaction to what stupid fucking generative AI is doing -- that shit stole from us, and it stole poorly, incompletely, and has none of our magic and zero of our humanity, our experience, our wonder and fear, and it never ever will. Fuck AI. You do you.
