The myth of the debtor as an individual who made a bad choice obscures the reason that we are in debt. Medical debt doesn’t exist in countries with nationalized health care systems, and student debt is unheard of in parts of the world where public college is free.
Trump understands that federal student loan debt is a tool of social control — a way to structure society based on who gets relief and who doesn't.
Sadly, he's using it to keep people indebted when he could use it to liberate people. This is classism.

Just to be clear about the big bill Republicans are passing: it will remove the authority for a President to eliminate federal student debt through executive order. That, sadly, confirms what we already knew — that the authority existed and was clear. This bill is very, very dangerous.
