NEW PUBLICATION 🎉🎉🎉
What is more important, democratisation or ethnographic security? Through the case of #Abkhazia, I argue that the latter will have a higher salience in places with contested nation- and state-building projects.

Algeria’s lower house of parliament is reviewing a bill that would let the state strip some Algerians of their citizenship, including those born Algerian, for actions deemed seriously harmful to national security or unity when committed in Algeria or abroad. north-africa.com/algeria-insi...
In my latest book review, I discuss @gezimvisoka.bsky.social & @rameshg.bsky.social “Sub-State Recognition: The Politics of Recognition from Below”, a powerful challenge to the state-centric orthodoxy of recognition and a major contribution to sovereignty studies. www.tandfonline.com/eprint/RRISX...

#OutNow: New report on #Ukraine's citizenship in wartime. @rameshg.bsky.social & @faburkhardt.bsky.social (#LeibnizIOS) analyze how #Russia's war transforms Ukrainian citizenship policy through forced naturalizations, demographic crisis, and mass displacement amid mobilization. #OpenAccess ⬇️
In the report we explore the effects of 🇷🇺's policies & annexations, demographic pressures, 🇪🇺's neighborhood policy, and statelessness reduction norms on Ukrainian citizenship regulations including the changing attitudes towards dual #citizenship.

While the statement itself is being debunked, it none the less raises a number of interesting legal, policy, and academic questions.
Can a de facto state engage in derecognition? And why have we not seen more cases like this?
And my forthcoming book with @gezimvisoka.bsky.social explores how and why Sub-state entities engage in state recognition (e.g. California recognising Nagorno-Karabakh). But this case of Somaliland, brings another dimension to recognition studies.
link.springer.com/book/9783031...
. @gezimvisoka.bsky.social discusses in his recent book in detail how and why states engage in the de-recognition of de facto states (e.g. Tuvalu derecognising Abkhazia).

So apparently #Somaliland has derecognised #Somalia.
While there are plenty of cases of derecognition of de facto states, this is one of the few (if not only?) cases where a de facto state has derecognised its claimant state in its entirety.

Citizens of #Abkhazia & #SouthOssetia can now apply for 🇷🇺 citizenship without fulfilling residency & language requirements. Though, based on the decree, it seems that individuals who turned 18 between 2008 & now, are still in limbo.

What a day in The Hague for the #RodeLijn protest.
The largest Dutch protest in 20 years!
Excited to share that we finally got the cover sorted for my first monograph co-authored with @gezimvisoka.bsky.social!!!

Dual #citizenship agreement between Russia & #Abkhazia/ #SouthOssetia enters into force. The agreements envisage simplified procedure for acquiring 🇷🇺 citizenship (procedures are being drafted).
Previously only Tajikistan & Turkmenistan had such agreements with 🇷🇺.

❗New Entry❗
Reparative citizenship may aim to right past wrongs, but @peterspiro.bsky.social argues it actually weakens the foundational concept of citizenship itself 🛂⚖️
It is unsentimental, instrumental, detached from the community and erodes civic ties 🧑🤝🧑🚫

Dear Anton, this is the exact type of example I was looking for.
Dear #OntologicalSecurity scholars, I'm looking for sources that discuss how macro level actors (states) engage in "creating" OS for micro level actors (citizens). Any literature that extensively discusses the interaction between different levels? @nckc.bsky.social @jelenasubotic.bsky.social
