We wanted to share this thoughtful post by @jackiewebb.bsky.social & @christinabirnbaum.bsky.social on writing with intention.

The U.S.'s decision to withdraw from global climate and environmental organizations and treaties will have ramifications far beyond the current administration.

Sorry to hear Teresa. You are such a brilliant ECR. The path is brutal at times but I'm sure you'll get there!
Proud to have published this piece with @christinabirnbaum.bsky.social for THE Campus.
Check out the article to hear our two cents on why pure writing is just too important to dismiss in this wild west AI landscape in higher education.

New publication in JGR: Biogeosciences on deep vs surface water CH4 dynamics in dugouts lead by amazing PhD student, Ryan Rimas!
We found that a wetter year caused more CH4 to accumulate in the hypolimnion, but this did not result in a significant change in surface water CH4.
Hopefully no landslides coming your way
New perspective piece on ditch greenhouse gas research I had the pleasure to collaborate on. Key research priorities are provided.
Not surprisingly, many studies neglect to include N2O. There is still much work to be done in this space and I'm looking forward to the next era of ditch research!
Pleased to say this paper has been accepted and coming soon to @iopp-environment.bsky.social. Led by @tksilver.bsky.social and with an all-star cast of supporting authors. A lovely way to end the year. Merry Ditchmas all!

Thanks, Diego - that means a lot!
Overall, Iβm feeling very celebrated - When outcomes were announced two weeks ago, I came home to a wonderful show of celebration by little family π¨βπ©βπ¦βπ¦ . And thank you to all those that have reached out, near and far. Feeling very grateful after a big year. More to come. 3/3
This work builds on from years of targeted research, new findings, collaborations, and challenges navigating the pathway of a first-in-family, researcher and mother in STEM. My interest in aquatic research started when I was quite young and itβs been a challenging journey to stay in academia. 2/3
Against the odds, I've been awarded a Discovery Early Career Researcher Award by the Australian Research Council! I am truly humbled by this opportunity and grateful for the support of many wonderful people both in my professional and personal circles.

Congrats! About ditch management for emissions?
First Australian rainforests, now Africa's. Seems like a sad common theme and tipping point is happening across the world.
Hello Christchurch! It's been a while since I've been back in the South Islands dramatic landscape. Looking forward to some freshwater science soon at he NZFSS and AFSS conference
Great to get a heads up so I can plan not coming into work for the rollercoaster of emotions that will likely ensue...π«
Amazing work, Laura! Putting this on my to-read list
Really cool audio story on our recent ditch paper by @emfurd.bsky.social. Let's all pay more attention to our ditches...

Vote for your favourite human dominated river. Go the Waikato!
Spent my week sampling weirs and rivers in regional SE Queensland with my MSCN student. It was hot work, but some absolutely beautiful and truely Australian waterways.
It's been a while since I've worked in flowing waters!

Never heard of BIOGEOMON? The joint ASLO-SIL would be a big one and I've been eyeing that one for a while...
I have my undergrad students in water science make a poster of their water quality data they collect over the trimester. My assessment instructions are pretty simple, but am happy to share it, along with some great poster examples if you like?

The same student also captured an intriguing metallic layer that formed on one of the acidified ponds just one week into the experiment. I suspect this was organic oils from the decomposition of organic matter as supported by the low DO reading at the time. How cool is that?!
π Prolonged deoxygenation occurs within days following acidification
π Phosphate is mobilized, which occurs more gradually over the course of the experiment (4 weeks)
Some of these results are shown here in a snapshot from one student's poster presentation.
