I'm delighted with my heat pump.
But my experience getting it installed taught me whatβs been stopping many more people from getting one (so far).
I wrote for @politicshome.bsky.social on the hurdles that government needs to think about as it implements the Warm Homes Plan. π

NEW ANALYSIS: UK emissions fell 2.4% in 2025 as coal fell to a 400-year low. Incredibly, we used less coal last year than than in 1600, when Queen Elizabeth I was on the throne and Shakespeare was writing Hamlet.

The great British electricity puzzle
It turns out that making the transition to clean energy while keeping the price down is hard
This is a frustrating column by Martin Wolf - which is sadly typical of a lot of economics commentary on GB energy.
It does identify some of the key causes of high electricity prices - including Britainβs high exposure to gas prices and rising network costs. But thereβs a lot it leaves outβ¦

I could have understood it as house style for acronyms, but the IEA, PPP and IMF say otherwise.
I guess this is just one of those mysteries

I'm revisiting Stonehaven's paper on the future of the UK gas fleet, and it's as good and interesting as when I first read it. But what on earth is going on with these country names? I'm perplexed.

The complaint about being excluded from the NCC scheme also rings a bit hollow, since that just shifts costs onto households.

Multiple people tell me the only reason they still use Facebook is for FB Groups. So, of course, Meta is doing its best to ruin that feature with an unstoppable AI inviting hundreds of people to someone's private tea party group.

Happy Centrica results day. Some years ago I would have been appearing on BBC Radio, usually alongside Martin Lewis to explain (note: not defend) why it made a profit (work of the devil etc).
So let's have a little look at a couple of interesting things going on in the results...

Air-to-air heat pumps: a low-carbon solution for UK homes
A2A heat pumps can provide homeowners with an additional option for decarbonising home heating
February is a great time to talk about⦠air conditioning. Otherwise known as air to air heat pumps, which can heat as well as cool your home, very efficiently.
We have a big new report out today on how suitable air to air heat pumps are for British homes. The answer: quite a lot!

Of course. Why would you invest in soft power?
It just helps in the kind of warfare that:
a) Russia has shown it's actually good at;
b) Russia is waging on the West already;
c) The UK/NATO nuclear deterrent is useless in preventing;
d) Costs a fraction to fund compared to military hardware.

The @qmul.bsky.social news article on it is pretty shoddy too. This line which subtly conflates the annual cost of curtailment in 2025 to the total projected cost between 2025-2030 makes it look like we'll be spending Β£20bn per year. I had to read it twice to be sure. A poor effort there.
