Castelnau is one of the more fascinating figures for me of #WWI. Drastically left out of the narrative in both French and English histories of battles like #Verdun.

That is not to diminish the importance, or poor treatment the Tirailleurs Sรฉnรฉgalais experienced even before entering the army, but the numbers just don't add up.
I think that's an overstatement. It was certainly discussed at some levels of French command though. A lot of it comes from Colonial officers pressing for attention. 63,000 Tirailleurs Sรฉnรฉgalais were recruited in all of 1918 as compared to 229,000 men called up in the class of 1919 in April 1918.

Remains of a French uniform found recently in the Ypres Salient. This area is just west of Hollebeke. In 1914 and early 1915, the French formed the largest contingent of allied soldiers at Ypres, including during the 1st Battle of Ypres.
