Ivory colored manuscript page with a vertically aligned inset illustration depicting a rocky outcropping in a muted rainbow of colors with twisting trees. Behind the outcropping is a golden sky with scrolling clouds. Near the top center is an image of a seated man wearing animal skins and a domical crown. He gestures to his left toward another seated male figure as a young man stands on his right. Animals, plants, and humans surround the central figures, and abundant vegetation grows. Shahanameh of Shah Tahmasp, folio 20v, Iran, 16th c., Aga Khan Museum
What is Islamic art? lol glad you asked my friend but guess what? It's almost impossible to define. Yet that semiotic fluidity is what makes it so endlessly fascinating.
Every Monday, I'll post an object from my class History of the Medieval Islamic World in 100 Objects. It'll be funnn come along!
