Some days I wonder if my deeper scholarly loves are really history of science and art history. I'm moving on to the next chapter on my list to tackle for the book project and my reaction is "oh...poetry." I just had a blast writing about Anna Atkins, too. π

Lithographs of Hawkins's sketches of Ichthyosaur anatomy, with handwritten attotations.
A very special #FossilFriday. Thanks to @nhmlibraryarchives.bsky.social, one of the c19th's greatest works of palaeontological literature is now properly digitised: Thomas Hawkins's beautiful, epic, semi-unhinged Memoirs of Ichthyosauri and Plesiosauri (nhm.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/permalink/44...)

Another query, though-that seems really odd to be the background for a watercolor painting by a woman, given the content. Did it have any association at all with science? Or museums? or marine ecology? Stone did this painting for Lever & no other image in the collection has a text, literally at all.

The Amsterdam publication info is very helpful--I had been thinking it was the opera because this was painted between 1781 and 1785, so I thought an early century novel seemed unlikely but Amsterdam was throwing me off.

Ohhh I didn't think of that. I had thought of the Le Sage novel but this was painted sometime between 1781-1785, so I thought the novel would be oddly outdated.
