Perhaps this account is parody, but it exemplifies why I cancelled my subscription to the @nytimes.com and haven't looked back, even with regular deep discount offers.

A storefront in Hollywood glows during the golden hour. Some palm trees line the street itβs on. Circa 2005 maybe? They used this building on Beverly and Gardner as the Peach Pit in the newer version of 90210. I drove or walked by it every day so would see them filming. One day while driving by, they werenβt actively filming and I saw Tristan Wilds. I leaned out the window and yelled βyo Omarβs coming.β He liked that so he smiled and waved. I donβt usually take pictures within the city, but the last one seemed to be liked so here goes. Iβll be back to mountains, rivers and oceans soon enough I suppose.

Ooookay here we go. Bad Bunny 101 condensed into six weeks of music, reading material, and perreo
No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientistβbecause the person felt she did didnβt deserve the recognition.
Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...
Even if they choose to publish on Substack (for reasons), I don't understand why creators insist on completely ceding their personal brand by calling their newsletter a "Substack" or (even worse) calling their readers "Substackers".
It is at this point that I should mention that this coming Saturday morning is Ice Cream for Breakfast Day
Including dozens of my family's Jewish neighbours, murdered (I've seen the pages of death records with name after name, family after family). Remembering them today.
But "Journalists don't write the headlines!" so everything must be forgiven.
The shingles vaccine has demonstrated in what is now a 4th replication that it results in a ~20% reduction in dementia. This is better than any drug ever designed and tested for Alzheimerβs.
For those who walk, run, donate for cures to Alzheimer's, Cancer, etc. but then are vaccine hesitant, what did you think a cure would look like?
Black and white portrait of Edith Frank (nΓ©e HollΓ€nder). Mother of Margot & Anne Frank.
16 January 1900 | German Jewish woman Edith Frank (nΓ©e HollΓ€nder) was born in Aachen. Mother of Margot & Anne Frank.
Incarcerated in #Auschwitz with her husband Otto and daughters on 5 September 1944. She perished in the camp on 6 January 1945, 10 days before her 45th birthday.
There is a road, no simple highway
Between the dawn and the dark of night
And if you go, no one may follow
That path is for your steps alone
If you need a mundane example of how much people look at words/headlines and don't understand them, it's the number of times I track a citation of @richterscale.bsky.social's piece back and find it being used to argue that historians confirm the electricity biscuits theory.
Why does anyone ever refer to themselves or their readers as "Substackers"? At best it makes as much sense as "Squarespacer" or "MailChimper" and at worst it reminds me I should probably cancel your newsletter.
I am honoured to announce Iβve been appointed as a member to the Order of Canada. Thank you to everyone for the support! I dedicate this to my late Mom who taught me so much about history, local independent media & research. I know that she would be, like me, screaming with joy! #orderofcanada
Make America Smaller than Indonesia, Pakistan, and Nigeria. #MASTIPAN
Contrary to the comments of those who have travelled this road before, I'm imagining this is all a conscious literary device that somehow resolves in a final chapter tweetstorm with the footnote writer exposed as the main character (book and internet). Keep going!

Family owns a wonderful independent bookstore, so my Christmas Eve Day tradition is getting last minute recommendations and ordering from what is remaining as they close for holidays.

Hate seems to be thriving. It is important to read this piece to understand what is foot in Canada & work against people who canβt see the humanity in their neighbour. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/... #cdnpoli
If you're not trans, I don't think I can fully explain how important this is.
It's so powerful that one of the most circulated science media publications in the world has come out and said "trans children are real and providing transition care improves their lives." That's groundbreaking.
While in Winnipeg, I also visited Smith Carter's SC3 LEED Building (now Architecture49) and the Royal Mint, which were both pretty cool.
Until my disappointing visit to downtown Winnipeg, I never realized Randy Bachman was picturing idling in a warm car or shopping in a fluorescent lit underground pathway when he sang 'Portage and Main, 40 below!'

On a cold business trip to Winnipeg, 15 years ago, I was excited to be staying just a few blocks away from Canada's most famous intersection, and then bewildered to find that it was bizarrely inaccessible.
