Hi Sergio, we used 7 questions in the Add Health survey and applied factor analysis. The idea is that grit is a latent factor that is unobserved but it affects the 7 variables we observe. We validated our grit measure in Table 2. More details are in online appendix A ars.els-cdn.com/content/imag...

P.S. In the robustness section we show a specification with clustered s.e. by school and cohort.

The US setting is also important for our empirical strategy: there high school students are not in fixed classrooms. They choose courses and are likely to interact and be exposed to many students of their cohort.

Take Uni Mannheim as an example. For sure students are very good on average. But some cohorts happen to be better on average than others and this within school between cohorts variation is random.

Hi Marc, thank you so much! You are right to say that students are likely to select into peer groups. This is why we use exposure to cohort-mates. Parents may choose the school, children may choose the friends, but they cannot choose the cohort.

Excited to share new work with Yaming Cao @zew.de and @kayaez.bsky.social @cu-cardiffbusiness.bsky.social published in Labour Economics! Students with gritty peers in high school are more likely to succeed in the labor market. Gritty peers are pivotal for #FirstGen students. doi.org/10.1016/j.la...

Figure shows that blue collars suffer the most from the removal of minimum wages. Most importantly, there is substantial heterogeneity in welfare gains and losses over the skill distribution. The consumption equivalent welfare losses are above -0.2% for low-skill blue collars, while high-skill blue collars are slightly better off.

While much of the debate over minimum wages focuses on how they affect average pay levels or job losses, an equally important question is how they shape the way economic risk is shared within firms. This column uses data from the Italian metalworking sector to show how, in the case of a negative productivity shock, minimum wages provide insurance to low-skill workers against wage volatility while passing more of the wage adjustment burden to higher-paid workers. These dynamics highlight that minimum wage floors redistribute not only pay but also the risks associated with firm-level fluctuations.

Unternehmenskrisen: Kettenreaktion in Gehaltsstrukturen
