“With home woodburning increasing, the [European Code Against Cancer] calls on governments to discourage and phase out solid fuels for heating, cooking and recreation.”
Industry should not be trying to stop councils from communicating the facts.
The health effects of burning are widely known.
Modern stoves are not the answer: some emit MORE tiny particles of soot, carbon and cancer-causing chemicals than older stoves.
Non-essential burning has to stop.
15% In London, domestic combustion - mostly from burning wood - contributes to over 15% of PM2.5 pollution, more than all the city's passenger cars. Source: London Atmospheric Admissions Inventory (GLA/TfL)
The Government is holding a consultation on wood burning. It's a unique opportunity to call for:
🔥 Limits on how much pollution stoves can emit
🚫Stronger penalties for suppliers who don’t meet standards.
✅ Clearer information on stoves to help people make informed choices.
It's so good to hear that "the overwhelming majority" of #Sheffield's Clean Air Zone revenue is to go towards protecting children from the harmful effects of #AirPollution. Cycle training, cycle storage, 20mph limits outside schools and 19 new #SchoolStreets will be funded - fantastic to hear.
Wood burning is a choice…
Mums for Lungs launches nationwide ‘Clean Air Crowd’ challenge
Mums for Lungs has announced the launch of the ‘Clean Air Crowd’ – a seven-day air pollution challenge running from Saturday 28th February to Friday 6th March.

Nothing to do with wood burning.
PM2.5 pollution from wood burning is nearly 60% of Domestic Combustion emissions.
That's 12% of the national total.

Wood burners polluting rural homes more than traffic
A citizen science project with schoolchildren on the Isle of Anglesey has revealed that, for rural children, the greatest threat to air quality is not outside on the roads, but inside their own homes. airqualitynews.com/headlines/wo...

We need health & safety protections for all neighbours. Its about distance
from windows to the chimney, not whether urban or rural. We have this for gas boilers, but not wood burners. Yet Carbon Monoxide & other emissions are not even in same ball park. 720g/yr avg gas boiler Vs 34kg avg Ecodesign

Your Policy Pathway to phase out wood burning in urban areas is brilliant.
But rural wood burning is still a problem.
"researchers found urban children experienced less particle pollution, compared with those at the rural school."

“Children living in homes with wood burners could be exposed to over three times more pollution than those in non-wood-burning homes…”

Air pollution joins Europe’s list of cancer risks
Air pollution has today (4th February) been formally recognised as a cancer risk in Europe for the first time, after being added to the European Code Against Cancer.

Domestic wood burning is a major source of PM2.5 air pollution in the UK. This presentation from Communities Against Woodsmoke explains how smoke from domestic wood-burning stoves affects air quality, public health, and everyday life in our communities.

A suggested warning label in the UK for new wood stoves says: “Please be aware that this appliance emits air pollution into and around your home which can harm your health.”
What about the health of everyone else in the neighborhood?

Thanks to Alex in #Isleworth for putting up our posters in her local GP surgery and community centre, and for chatting to Hounslow Fire Brigade about #WoodBurning. Burning wood and smokeless fuel makes our air dirty and harms #Health. #CleanAirNight @lfb-hounslow.bsky.social
DEFRA has just published a consultation on solid fuel burning. We're happy to see a long-term campaign ask addressed - warning labels on stoves. However, the proposals will only impact future emissions; they will do nothing to help all those affected by existing burning. #CleanAirNight #WoodBurning

Yep. Ready To Burn wood on Ecodesign would INCREASE 22 pollutants out of 53.
Ready To Burn wood and new stoves will not, in all cases, deliver the AQ improvements the industry claims.

How can replacing fireplaces and older stoves with modern Ecodesign wood burning stoves, help provide cleaner air, when the NAEI data clearly shows that 22 pollutants of 53, would be higher?
