That's awesome, but I think I can answer that question.
Adding variety of combat an encounter types with mostly melee enemies is really difficult. Projectiles give you so many options for creating different scenarios and gives you lots of potential tools for players to solve those challenges.

Very sad to hear that Sandy Duncan has passed. Without Sandy's considerable investment, leadership, and team building, there would be no GameMaker today. It would have faded into memory long ago, and many wonderful indies might never have realized their dreams. RIP.
You will not find anything even remotely like the "Sara Spaulding Collision Code" while watching tutorials for other engines; they just don't have to deal with the low level world collision checking and pixel pushing like we do... and I honestly wonder why we force ourselves to.
Have you messed with the physics engine at all?
There's this weird stigma around it in GM for some reason, but you go to ANY OTHER ENGINE and the first thing any tutorial will have you do is set up a physics body for a character. Why we don't do the same thing in GM is baffling to me.

Your game have a static aspect ratio? But you want to draw stuff ON the black bars? This will give you the bounds of the gui event INCLUDING the black bars without having to use display_set_gui_maximize()
