If there is suspected human trafficking, police must investigate - this can otherwise violate victims’ defence that they’re a victim of trafficking under section 45 of ECHR. And this also means that article 6, right to a fair trial, has also been violated. This resulted in a £65k fine in this case.

However, the police often don’t open a crime report on this, AND it can take up to two years for people to go from potential trafficking victim status to confirmed victim status. This is often way later than victims’ court cases (for crimes committed while/as a consequence of being trafficked.
There are about eight bodies that can refer to the NRM. When cases are added, an automatic email is sent to the relevant police force for the reported case.

Human trafficking is a serious crime and can be a life sentence. However, police try to get the trafficked person to say they’re trafficked which they are unlikely to admit to or even understand. Police need to use all the other evidence available outside of victim testimony. #HumanTrafficking
Many ways to control kids, not just use of explicit force - conversations in the margins are letting kids overhear discussion about how you have harmed other people for example #HumanTrafficking
In Ukraine, boys are being taken for the Russian army, used to dig the graves of those killed in combat #MSHT
Organ harvesting is rarely prosecuted in the UK but it does happen
So many ways that people can be exploited: construction labour, agricultural work, sex work, selling drugs, organ harvesting… #MSHT #HumanTrafficking
For #CountyLines, there are a lot of psychological coercion tactics that are employed by the traffickers - victims may look free, but it’s not the case, threats, debt bondage, etc all coerce the victim. #HumanTrafficking
The means of exploitation or trafficking can be varied, it might not look like trafficking to others #MSHT
