Watercolour painting of three Goldcrests amongst ivy
Occasionally we get tiny Goldcrests in the garden, hunting for insects amongst the evergreens. They’re resident in Britain, but some Goldcrests cross the North Sea to escape the harsher continental winters; people used to believe they rode on the backs of migrating Woodcocks. (watercolour)

I see there’s a post about microplastics going around with a photo of drinking straws, so here is my semi-regular reminder that the 3 biggest sources of microplastics are tires (45%), synthetic clothing particles (35%) and paint (~10%).

Four books. One grand prize. Five days left until voting ends.
2025 was the year of the transfeminine contemporary novel, and the four novels shortlisted for Best Transfeminine Fiction are leading the charge.
If you haven't voted yet, now is the time. Voting closes Dec. 26th at 11:59pm EST 🩷
Just don’t talk about people’s food choices at all unless they volunteer, I for instance absolutely hate being asked to explain why I don’t eat meat (shut up is why)
Mostly: if you have a good reason for going your way, stick to it. But also consider if some of their feedback might make the book better.
This is a hard process. Wish you lots of luck!
and see if you want to do something about the latter.
It can also be that their frame of reference is different from yours (they're a different demographic, are used to reading other genres, etc.) so their feedback may not be as useful.
it's very hard to reject feedback at this stage, from my own experience. I think it's useful to think about not the solutions that they're offering (e.g., change the ending to xx) but about the limitations they see in the book (e.g., maybe this subplot is not resolved at the end) +
It's definitely allowed to reject criticism that doesn't serve your work! If you're sure that those changes won't make your book better or will undermine what you're trying to do, don't do them. You want feedback that will make the book into more of what it is, not less.
Epstein met with Chomsky more than once, usually with disgraced sex pest Lawrence Krauss in tow. Chomsky's responses to the inane and brain-dead questions often posed by Epstein were friendly. Chomsky was in touch with Epstein until right before the latter man died in prison.

I have a lifetime to think about what a world without Alice in embodied form looks like. To have loved and been loved by her was one of the greatest privileges of my life. I will carry her spirit with me always.
I don’t want to formulate words yet, but my friend Alice Wong, @sfdirewolf.bsky.social of the Disability Visibility Project, has passed.
Here are the words she left behind:
