I am offering two MSc by Research opportunities in my laboratory (self-funded!), one on the human-pathogenic yeast Candidazyma auris tinyurl.com/ys8zexbv
Just arrived in Newcastle for the @gensocuk.bsky.social summer studentship workshop, looking forward to interesting science from early-career researchers #genetics
Six more yearsβplus a lot of blood, sweat, and tearsβlater, we are thrilled to finally share it: a cytological framework of female meiosis in Arabidopsis!

Apparently my BSc project students enjoyed their time in my lab as much as I enjoyed supervising them

The truth is that the scientific process is horribly inefficient and wasteful. But the solution is NOT cutting funds and itβs NOT top down guidance of what should be studied. Instead, we should revolutionize how we publish and improve peer review.
Thanks for your message. We don't know enough about biocide selection in C. auris and how this affects its genetics and biology, so hard to tell.
we observe that these variants show little changes in biochemical and ultrastructural features of the cell wall, and that the moderate fitness trade-offs ultimately do not impinge on the pathogenicity potential of C. auris (in contrast to what has been reported for Candida albicans). 4/4
we show that these variants produce cross-resistance to other echinocandin drugs but moderate collateral sensitivity to other antifungals and cell wall stress (fitness trade-offs) 3/n
we show that caspofungin-resistant isolates harbour SNPs in the expected target gene FKS1 (FKS1-S639P and FKS1-S639Y variants) 2/n
In this manuscript we show that a caspofungin-sensitive C. auris clade II isolate can develop resistance against caspofungin during in vitro evolution under drug pressure (similar approaches were previously unsuccessful) 1/n
I posted this preprint to bioRxiv already before the holiday break and didn't have time to talk about it here yet www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... π§¬π§«π¬ Work from two of my PhD students, Zoe and Sakinah, with help from Yixin & @chitinette.bsky.social

Hi Bluesky. For my first post, I'd like to advertise the latest preprint from my lab, describing at long last our reconstitution of SPO11-dependent double-strand break formation from purified recombinant proteins. Outstanding work from PhD student Zhi (Zack) Zheng.
