For our research group the quick IO and compression has enabled us to iterate and develop much faster. We just output to gpkg and gdb when we need to. In combination with geopandas It has made big geodata processing much smaller in my experience. Leaves ESRI far behind in the research space.

The important point this raises is that countries commonly under invest in these data assets. It is under appreciated how important they are.
