If youโve ever wondered why local budget decisions feel so constrained, this is the โwhy.โ
Virginiaโs funding formula shapes class sizes, staffing, and student supportsโbut it does not work the same way for Alexandria as it does for most school divisions.
Last weekโs School Board work session focused on how Virginia funds public schools. Ahead of tomorrowโs FY27 Combined Funds Budget presentation, weโre sharing a breakdown of what that system means for Alexandria families.

Want to learn more about why we created this website? This post explains why the site was created, what youโll find here, and how weโre working to make Board work more visible and easier to follow. www.acpsschoolboard.com/post/welcome...
This account reflects the work of the School Board as a governing body.
Itโs focused on process, decisions, and transparencyโnot individual opinions or campaigns.
Our goal is to share information that is clear, factual, timely, and respectful.
When topics are complex, we focus on explaining the process and outcomes, and linking to original materials.
Weโll use this Bluesky account to share and amplify updates published on the ACPS School Board website.
Think highlights, reminders, and links back to the full context.
Most people canโt attend every meeting or read every Board brief. We get it.
The new School Board website shares context around what weโre working on, why it matters, and where things are headed.
Weโve launched a new website for the Alexandria City Public Schools School Board.
Itโs designed to make Board work easier to follow, with clear updates, background, and links to source materials.
