Ron Charles is a goddamn national treasure and should be treated as such.
Ok, you can stop texting me, I saw the Ring ad. Troubling things about it π§΅:
-The long awaited (much warned about) intro of βAIβ recognition. It starts w/ searching for a βbrown dogβ but means the tech is there for lisence plate reading, face recognition, searching for suspects by description, etc
Having seen several abductions up close, it is really hard to convey how much the thing theyβre doing is roaming in military convoys until they see someone who is alone and isnβt white, and then jumping out in large numbers, pulling them into a van, and screeching off, all in 90 seconds or so.
When I asked students to include citations to academic research in their papers, they often included articles from disreputable journals. I realized maybe no one had ever told them about predatory publishing. A short guide to searching the literature responsibly, in light of predatory publishing:
Thanks for this. I am adding this to my 'critical information literacy' section of my undergrad methods class this semester.
[slow clap]
For those keeping score, Bellingcat, The New York Times Visual Investigation Team, & Washington Post's Visual Forensic team have all published analysis showing the ICE shooter wasn't in the path of Renee Nicole Goodβs vehicle when he shot her, contradicting statements by the President & his cronies
Literal thought police
βThe ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or the dedicated communist, but people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction, true and false, no longer exists." - Hannah Arendt
Greenland is just a tool for Miller to try to destroy NATO in all but name. He is counting on being able to force the US into an Article 5 violation & sees either potential response from NATO as a win (capitulation that takes the teeth out of A5 long-term or a military conflict).
Just a reminder that at least 600 Americans were fired for failing to show sufficient respect after Charlie Kirk's murder.
New from Michael Miller and me at @thejop.bsky.social: Evidence that, in most areas that were affected by the decision, the Supreme Court decision gutting the Voting Rights Act in 2013 (Shelby County v Holder) increased the racial turnout gap. A thread...

If only there had been a Gooooood Boyyyyy with a gun present.
A screenshot of a retweet from the author which reads βmy initial gut reaction was that Foucault should be played by @VinDiesel, but then I realized that Dominic Toretto would never advocate being critical of the innate and hidden political power of institutions likeβ¦ FAMILY.β The original tweet the author is referencing says βFoucault and Chomsky debate movie needs to happenβ with a photograph showing Henry Cavill cast as a hound Chomsky and Diesel cast as a young Foucault.
Three-year anniversary or my greatest piece of short-form writing ever. I am no longer on the garbage fire of X, so please accept this screen shot in its memory. #Foucault #Chomsky
A roundup of some recent Goucher College #facultyscholarship.

Yes! I literally never had fall allergies before moving to DC and now almost two decades later it feels like the fall is worse than the spring for me.
As someone who just did an unplanned 30-minute explainer on the government shutdown, this is your periodic reminder that sometimes youβve got to call an audible and throw out the lesson plan. #HigherEd #Faculty #Teaching&Learning.
So thrilled to celebrate these exciting new #GoucherCollege #faculty projects this afternoon. Really excited to hear about this wide ranging research. #scholarship #liberalarts
Mark this moment as the unequivocal return of the thought police.
Listen, I donβt know anything about the upcoming Marky Mark film βPlay Dirty,β but it seems gross that they are happy to play the hell out of the Sampa The Great song βFinal Formβ in the trailer while never once using the chorus which loudly proclaims βBlack Power, Louder!β
I donβt need a 3 min ad for a show disguised as a βpresenterβ for you to shame an award winner to for taking an extra 3 seconds. The bit feels gross #emmy but what else would I expect from a gutless capitulating network like @cbsnews.com (cbs get a Bluesky account so I can yell at you, cowards).
A full house of Goucher faculty and staff engaged in a discussion of first gen college students
So lucky to have @sonjaardoin.bsky.social join us at Goucher College today to talk with Faculty and staff about supporting #FirstGen college students.
Only the most recent example of why I am and always will be a vocal and committed advocate for #DCstatehood. It is an imperative.

America now has the foreign policy of a personalist dictator. New piece from me in @foreignaffairs.com

And again, they were about 15-20 times as large as the April 2009 Tea Party protests, so I'll sit back and wait for 15-20 times as many stories from political pundits explaining that this was a decisive rebuke to the sitting president that Changes Everything.
Honestly there were more people lined up at the opening of the new #Rockville #TraderJoes earlier this week. And that was 8:30 am on a Thursday. #MoCo @themocoshow.bsky.social
Today, I opposed the OPM's proposed "Schedule P/C" rule that kills due process rights for thousands of federal employees. Instead of emphasizing empirically the harm this rule will cause (see great insights from @donmoyn.bsky.social), I focused more on legal and constitutional grounds. (1/2)
Ridiculous way to frame the story. Brown in no way disciplined the student. It says so in the article:
"Brown eventually cleared all three students of wrongdoing ... the university followed a standard procedure for students accused of conduct violations, and that this case was no different."
