Catkins are thin strings of flowers grown by trees like hazel. Its yellow, male catkins (known as 'lamb's-tails') appear in spring and release pollen which blows on the wind, reaching female flowers which will become hazelnuts.

Have you seen any bumblebees yet? 🐝

Early bumblebees are starting to venture out on sunny days to visit spring flowers like crocuses and daffodils.

If you hear a familiar buzzing it could be a queen bee looking for somewhere to start her nest!

πŸ“ Listen for them at the Welcombe Hills

Herons are often seen standing as still as a statue on their long legs in the waters of ponds and lakes, patiently waiting for their next meal to swim by. 🐟

Look for herons at Brandon Marsh Nature Reserve!

There's been a rare sighting at Brandon Marsh... blue skies! 🌦️ Despite the rain some great wildlife has been recorded, including a barn owl nesting near the Ted Jury hide.

If you're visiting us in the next few days don't forget your wellies, and warm up with a hot drink from our cafΓ©. β˜•

The smew is an uncommon visitor to the midlands, where they're sometimes found on lakes and gravel pits.

Adult males are unmistakable, but most of the ones you'll see in the UK are greyer females and young birds.

Last year we had a few smew at Brandon Marsh nature reserve. Have you ever seen one?

What colours do you associate with winter?

The obvious answers are white, for the occasional dusting of snow; or grey, for those short, rainy days.

But winter is full of bright delights. If we look closely at nature, there are incredible colours to be found, even on the most overcast days. 🍁πŸͺ²πŸͺΆ

Seeing a red kite soaring is a true delight! Once a rare bird, thanks to successful reintroduction projects they can now be seen across the Midlands.

Red kites have a 1.8m wingspan and forked tail which makes them easy to identify.
