As a student minister, I 1st learned about Tourette’s right after being called N*GGER by an unhoused White man. My White minister supervisor said “he’s not racist he’s sick.”Years later, I STILL think he was not as racist or as sick as the nation that taught him the word.
Five years on I still harbor lots of negative feelings for that city and dislike going there, I hope to be able someday to contextualize my emotional scars more like Cornell has.
It was new to me that a city I had visited throughout my entire life could become so painful to be in, but that's many people's daily experience of their day-to-day environment.
