Unsolicited advice for incoming PhD students:
Be wary of faculty who tend to shit-talk their colleagues in the presence of students. Don't allow yourself to be conscripted into their petty rivalries
(Not casting aspersions. I do it myself. And now that I am doing work that's more social/institutional history, I find myself writing with conflicting tenses regularly...)
Has anyone written on historians of philosophy's propensity to write in present tense about historical philosophical theories? There is some sort of Platonic assumption about the atemporality of the conceptual systems we are engaging with, right?
