Loving the vibrant beauty of this red kale!
#DYK that the reddish-purple colour is due to the presence of anthocyanins? These pigments are known to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.
It's gorgeous now, but just wait until fall - cooler temperatures intensify these hues π€©

For those who haven't tried it before: it can be eaten raw, but unless you REALLY love bitter, it's best mixed with milder tasting greens like lettuce, chard, or spinach to keep it in balance.Β Cooking also mellows out the bitterness, and it's a great choice in soups or sauteed.Β 3/4
Often overlooked as food for humans, dandelion is a bitter green with so many health benefits. Its high potassium content makes it particularly useful as a mild diuretic.Β 2/4
Embracing the bitter beauty of dandelion!Β Β Cut by hand and bunched with utmost care, the variety we grow is different than what grows on your lawns, characterized by extra large leaves.Β 1/4
Once they reach beautiful maturity, they are harvested with care and sent on their way to your plates!Β Β 3/3

Those will be the first crops to be ready.Β We also plant lettuce from seed, so other lettuces begin their journey right in the field.Β We do our best to time growth cycles so that by the time one batch is finished, another is good to go. Steady supply is our goal!Β 2/3
Some of our lettuces begin their journey with a head start in a warm and humid greenhouse in early spring. When the time is right, the tiny seedlings get transplanted into our fields where they can spread out in the great outdoors, rooted in healthy soil.Β 1/3

This heat wave has come at a crucial time for our beloved carrots, & we've been watching closely. The emerging plants are still in their infancy, & if the soil temp reaches a certain threshold, they will die. While unpleasant for us, the humidity helped keep the temp below this critical point. 2/3
Truly thankful for the rain we got this morning! A "Million Dollar Rain" - just enough of the right kind of rain at the right time. 1/3

Where are the Ontario organic strawberries?
If you're feeling like it's been harder to find Ontario's beloved strawberries this year - you're not alone. This growing season has seen a much slower start thanks to unseasonably cold weather in May. 1/3

What we do:
βοΈShift the work day- early start, early finish to avoid the worst
βοΈWorkers minimize physical exertion, take frequent breaks in the shade & stay hydrated
βοΈTeam leads are trained to watch for signs of heat exhaustion
βοΈTeammates look out for each other with a buddy system 2/2
The weather forever shapes our days, and with today's forecast calling for 36 degrees with a humidex well into the 40s, safety has to come first. We can't bring the fields indoors, but we can take steps to ensure the safety and well-being of the teams who work outside. 1/2
