Speed thrills: why are so many sports getting faster? Many sports are almost unrecognisable to what they were a generation or more ago, and speed is one of the biggest factors in modern sports.

Faster, fitter players, and almost unlimited interchange, mean more congestion. (this gets a mention a long way down the article)

For me at least, and particularly with AFL, this makes the sports less watchable. AFL matches these days can seem like one long scrimmage
