It was going on one, two in the morning, and we were shooting what I felt was an important scene for me, when he makes an attempt to be quote-unquote straight, in a suit, and at the end of it he gets emotional and locks himself in the other room. And I felt like, Iβm not getting what I wantβIβm not happy with it. Mike was happy with it. He called me the next day and said, βI know you werenβt happy with the scene last night. Believe me, we wouldnβt have gone home if I had felt we werenβt getting it.β And then he sort of became my psychiatrist and said, βYou find it difficult to be happy, donβt you? You find it difficult to enjoy things.β And I said, βWell, sometimes. Last night was about feeling too tired and not feeling I was reaching what I needed to reach for the scene.β He talked to me then about when he was making, I donβt know whether it was Virginia Woolf or The Graduate. He said, βI didnβt enjoy it for a second. I was worried about so many things.β And then he said, βYou know, this is never going to happen again quite this way. You should try to allow yourself to enjoy this more. Take a minute a day, and then add a minute the next day, and another minute. Pretty soon, youβll have hours of happiness.β
The Birdcage opened thirty years ago today, so in its honor, I want to share one of my favorite stories about Mike Nichols that didn't make it into my biography. This is from an interview I did with Nathan Lane.
I didn't feel anything, but there's been dog howling in my neighborhood for the past half hour.
This is precisely the reason why our somewhat mutual friend Adam (Hot White Heist) started this LGBTQ+ foundation this week, because of dumb shit like this.

A dreadfully vague doodle of a face with pupilless eyes, crooked smile, and curly hair, with a lopsided Starfleet Delta drawn beneath.

He's an evangelical Christian, and quietly has been this whole time. It's just not good enough anymore to be one of the "nice ones." You either speak up for what's right, or you end up quietly accepting a lot of harmful ideology and eventually agreeing with it, if you didn't already.
Found a dollar in the pocket of one of the pants I was browsing through at the thrift store. My worries are over.
Jessica deserves better.
I like DS9's "Move Along Home."
Dangit, they added audio description to "Murder, She Wrote" on Prime but it's voiced by A.I. The cadence is stilted, and the way it reads the title of the show itself is a travesty.
Sometimes it feels like I'm a bystander in a Marvel movie watching people with too much power blast the city apart in a fight they could be having elsewhere.
Timothy Shall-not.
I love my The Pitt/Starfleet Academy Thursday nights, but it always leaves me with big feelings I don't know what to do with until I fall asleep staring at the ceiling.
I've grown more and more fond of it over the years. I think it has the best killer reveal.
How big are you?

Tonight's SNL should come back from commercial break to Connor and Hudson fucking vigorously in the corner of the set before they turn and notice in surprise and the show cuts to a test pattern.
All life is a cartoon, anyway.
When I first saw this at the movies and he collapses at the end of this song, a little girl piped up in the dead quiet theater to say, "Mom, is he dead?"
Midwesterner Fail: I forgot until yesterday that I had a housewarming this afternoon, so I had no time to get a housewarming gift. I'm going to have to bake something later.
View of the water tower on the Warner Brothers lot in Burbank, from across the intersection in front of the intersection. The iconic tower bears the blue and gold shield with the letters "WB" on it.
Quick, set the Warner siblings free before they change the logo on that thing.

Taylor Tomlinson in a leather coat and boots standing in the spotlight on a church stage in her comedy special.
Watching "Prodigal Daughter," and I might be bisexual for Taylor Tomlinson, or possibly it's the shared religious trauma.
