Moral is: never stop checking and never check out. Sometimes it takes twelve years. Those years pass and they’re full of joys and agonies. They still pass.

So now it’s twelve years later. The woman on the stage and I are married. Our first dance as spouses was “Phantom Pains” by Christine Fellows. And still no “Migrations.” Until we get a legit recording of it on a 7” with Mary! Chapin! Carpenter! causally dropped on a Bandcamp Friday.

Everyone applauds, she nailed it, show starts. John Darnielle comes out, he plays some of his songs, then he launches into Christine Fellows’ “Migrations” and crushes it. For years, I tried to find video of him playing it at any other show. I’ve seen TMG 20 times since and he never did.

At the show, they told us we’d be singing Nico’s “These Days” as a chorus later in the evening & asked someone to come onstage to lead the crowd in a practice round. My girlfriend volunteered, went up onstage &, in front of several hundred people with no warmup, sang in her clear, breezelike voice.
