I planned to share my report on the body cam footage early next week when I learned that a DC news station had obtained some of the footage as a result of my lawsuit and they were going to scoop me. After working on this for a year, I couldn't let that happen. Published 2 mins before they aired :)

It's like when tech billionaires invoke sci-fi stories, and people say, "he doesn't even understand that story's dystopian," but yes, they do get that! They simply embrace the dystopia, market it as inevitable, and want you to understand yourself as a winner or loser in that contextβ€”on their terms.

I recommend all!! Disabling Intelligences by @fractalecho.bsky.social was most focused on what I specifically wanted to learn. Others:

The AI Con by @emilymbender.bsky.social and @alexhanna.bsky.social

Resisting AI by @danmcquillan.bsky.social

More Everything Forever by @adambecker.bsky.social

This book has been my favorite of the four I've read on AI or Big Tech.

In comments of the quoted thread, @fractalecho.bsky.social says:

"In my book I call this the Disability Diversion where all criticism of techno fascism is deflected with appeals to technosaviorism."

This is so cool! And also, if this dates back far enough, it wouldn't just be a general interest in astronomy, it's about learning very real tools and skills for timekeeping and celestial navigation on the ocean!

So far in Michigan this is all I have, but it was such a joy to see them. Crocuses soon, I hope.

this is not an amount of money any individual or household should be able to have and we have to abolish both billionaires as a group and the economic system that makes them possible

Ugh, I'm glad I made it out of my own schooling uses of them and that the courses I teach now don't have built in need of Mathematica or Wolfram, because that sucks to hear.

I really wish the pro-Nazi platform wasn't where I could find my senator, actually.

i think enthusiastic LLM use is mostly a stack of cognitive biases, unacknowledged plagiarism, and unmet needs in a trenchcoat

but also my main objections aren't about them being bad at tasks so i don't care if you think they've gotten better at it

Em dashes were way more prevalent and overused in earlier models, but they originally came from the human writing that the LLMs are trained on, so use them when it feels right to do so! And my parents have ended their texts with ellipses for YEARS and I'm not worried about them using bots lol.

Calling AI "slop" has been one of the most effective instances of the public rebranding a product and it pisses them off.

Please, please end your partnership with OpenAI, @rweingarten.bsky.social @aft.org. In addition to everything else, given all that we know, it seems incredibly likely that that company is going to funnel student input straight into government surveillance files.

Artificial intelligence and illusions of understanding in scientific research - Nature The proliferation of artificial intelligence tools in scientific research risks creating illusions of understanding, where scientists believe they understand more about the world than they actual...

More broadly, the essay is a great example of the "illusion of understanding" that @lmesseri.bsky.social and I warned in 2024 would be a risk of using LLMs, especially as they become more capable

The rich are fully aware of climate catastrophe. But their solution for climate catastrophe is to get rid of the rest of us by the way. That’s why tech bros are arguing robots are less resource consuming than humans so openly.
