Interesting: Former Ward 3 Councilmember Mary Cheh is endorsing Kenyan McDuffie for mayor, saying that he has proven “he can get things done” while opponent @janeese4dc.bsky.social has a record that “is essentially barren.” Cheh’s endorsement is helpful in vote-rich Ward 3.

BALLOT INITIATIVE 🧵: Today the D.C. Board of Elections held a hearing on three different proposed ballot initiatives: One that would ban the sale of foie gras in D.C., another that would impose a two-year rent freeze, and a third to raise the minimum wage to $25.

When DC stands up and fights back, we win. DC's child tax credit and expanded EITC are the law, Washingtonians can file our taxes as normal, and Congress did not succeed in vetoing DC law. I will work hard to defend DC from any temper tantrums Republicans may throw in response

This might be the first time that D.C.’s CFO has been directly protested. Someone sent me a photo of a @freedcproject.bsky.social flyer posted outside his office in the Wilson Building today.

NEWS: The D.C. Council unanimously passed two bills aimed at shedding more light on federal agents patrolling in D.C.
One would release more body-camera footage from local police when federal agents use deadly force. Another would collect names of federal agents.

We have no idea how MPD is working with federal immigration authorities because MPD is deliberately not collecting that data. The FAAR Act would require them to collect it. It is an essential bill to protect immigrants in DC from federal abuse. The Council should pass it today

NEWS: @mayorbowser.dc.gov is asking the D.C. Council to vote against a pair of bills that would require more transparency on federal agents operating in the city, largely by mandating that body-camera footage from D.C. officers they patrol with be released when serious force is used.

Police Body Cameras: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)
YouTube video by LastWeekTonight
Here’s last night’s story about police body cams, why they alone won’t lead to more accountability for law enforcement, and how John has an ass that will absolutely quit. Without *any* notice. youtu.be/jP4_2soVZe0

This statue of Caesar Rodney (which was located in Wilmington, DE from 1923-2020) will soon be placed in the federally-controlled Freedom Plaza, directly across from the Wilson Building: archive.is/QNhMh

We’re 10 weeks away from mail-in ballots being automatically sent out to 359,000+ Democratic voters in the District, and one of the two major candidates in the mayoral primary still doesn’t have any detailed policy plans on his website (nor is showing up to forums/debates)

This is bonkers IMO. McDuffie's GGW questionnaire was consistent with his LONG record in office. Is there a *single* on-street PBL project in DC that he has supported? I'm sure people can find reasons to support KM for mayor, but "he secretly supports bikers" isn't reality-based or credible.

After months and months of solicitations and extensions, @ddotdc.bsky.social has cancelled the solicitation for a new bus shelter agreement. I am very confused as the Director testified last week that this was moving forward. The expansion of shelters that bus riders needed are long overdue.

Early in the hearing, Carroll insisted that MPD officers are obeying the law that prohibits them cooperating on immigration enforcement when they arrest someone. But he conceded that officers will share information of people detained in traffic stops with federal agents.

The Government’s opposition simply ignored the five specific examples of “other acts”evidence bad acts by Mr. White that are in addition to its allegations in the Indictment. Suchevidence, which the defense culled from its review of the discovery and specifically sought topreclude in this motion, is as follows:1) travel expenditures from CHS 1, which the Government referenced in the case agent’saffidavit in support of its Complaint in this case (ECF No. 1-1) as CHS 1 “corruptly givingWHITE gifts including travel to the Dominican Republic and Las Vegas, Nevada;2) campaign contributions from CHS 1;3) bribes relating to contracting by the company “Intralot” belonging to CHS 1;4) Failures to comply with D.C. campaign finance law and disclosure requirements;5) Undescribed acts under FBI investigation between September 2023 and January 2024.The Government should not be able to take back its prior statement that it had nointention of introducing any of these five items at trial and has intentions of introducing alleged2019 and 2020 government contracting bribery conduct as intrinsic evidence. The Governmentshould be restricted by this Court’s order from introducing further evidence if it keepsinvestigating Mr. White in the lead-up to trial and gives later notice. It is simply not fair to puton Mr. White later on the burden of preparing to meet these allegations and/or argue theirinadmissibility on the merits under Rules 403 and 404(b).
Very interesting: Trayon White's attorney writes in a new doc that prosecutors have discussed introducing evidence of "bribes relating to contracting by the company Intralot."
The informant who allegedly bribed White had a piece of Intralot's infamous sports betting contract...

It’s gonna be tough for anyone to stand out in this 10-candidate field so I’ll be very curious to see who else starts to win serious support

Interesting: Ward 2 Councilmember Brooke Pinto has introduced a bill that would require that MPD release footage from body cameras of D.C. officers who are accompanying federal agents when they shoot or use serious force against someone. Currently footage is released only if D.C. officer shoots.
