I grew up in a context where ‘feminist’ was a dirty word, for women who hated men and didn’t look after their appearance. It wasn’t until my late 20s that I embraced it as a term that meant being part of the fight for gender equality. And working in health care policy, I see even more the need to talk about protecting and advancing women’s rights. - Deborah Fenney

This International Women’s Day, Deborah Fenney explores the impact of medical misogyny on women’s health and care.

Would you call yourself a feminist?

We have 2 big questions:

What does a future welfare state need to look like? How do we build a health and care system that is compassionate, equitable and fit for the future, with people at its heart, and what does this mean for relationships between individuals, communities and the state? 2/3

I'll tell you what does drive people to despair: money worries. The idea that you can improve someone's mental health by giving them more money worries should be an obvious mistake of thinking. But it isn't. Because years of right wing rhetoric has made it impossible to see people's needs clearly

It highlights the need for better evidence and more attention to providing good, timely health care for trans folk. Take a look!

So sorry to hear about your friend - I hope the surgery gives her some relief. The other thing about #endometriosis is how poorly understood it is as a condition even once you're diagnosed. So much unknown re treatment and outcomes.

Medical misogyny sees women told to 'put up' with pain - BBC News One woman awaiting surgery said she had learned to "just get on with it because that's what you're told".
