Honored to be recognized by Reproductive for All California as a Reproductive Freedom Champion on their 2025 Legislative Scorecard. Protecting the right of every person to decide if and when to raise a family will always be worth fighting for.
That kind of presence intimidates voters and will cause people to walk away from the polls out of concern for their own safety. In California, we will not allow that.
Letβs be clear: the idea that large numbers of undocumented individuals are voting is simply not true. What is real is the fear created when masked ICE agents show up near polling places.
Thanks to KTLA News and Eytan Wallace for covering this. Senator Cervantes and I are committed to protecting our polling places and making sure every voter can cast a ballot without intimidation.
Clearly, the purpose of putting ICE in or around polling places is to intimidate voters. This is not new to me. Weβve seen tactics like this before, and it will not be tolerated in California. We will protect our voters and stop voter suppression.

"Senate Bill 884 was authored by state Sens. Tom Umberg, D-Santa Ana, and Sabrina Cervantes, D-Riverside. They said the goal is to ensure federal law enforcement officials cannot intimidate voters."

No kings here! SB 46 upholds the Constitution and protects our democracy by ensuring only eligible presidential candidates appear on Californiaβs ballotβbecause no one is above the Constitution.

As A.I. becomes more common in the legal system, we need clear guardrails to protect clientsβ confidentiality and ensure that real people, not algorithms, are making legal decisions. SB 574 does exactly that by setting responsible rules for the use of A.I. by attorneys and arbitrators.
"Weeks after President Donald Trump suggested on a conservative podcast that the Republican Party should 'nationalize' voting in the United States, California lawmakers are floating proposals to limit federal presence in elections."

Make no mistake - the Trump administration has made it clear that they want to nationalize and interfere with our elections. With these bills, California is fighting back and taking every step to protect our democracy, secure our polling places and defend our right to vote.
This morning, we had the opportunity to speak with the press about the importance of SB 884 and SB 73. These bills are critical for protecting the integrity of our elections and ensuring that every Californianβs voice is heard.
In California, we cannot and will not allow anyone to destroy the sacred right to vote or silence Californiansβ voices.
No president in history has so brazenly defied the Constitution again and again. Trumpβs plan is clear as day β if he canβt get his way through legal means, heβll try to upend the system itself, like a true dictator.
This is exactly why we authored SB 884.

"In an election year with the Trump administrationβs widespread crackdown on immigration enforcement in the backdrop, a pair of California lawmakers are looking to shore up protections for voters."

Thatβs why I authored SB 46, the No Kings and Election Qualifications Actβto ensure that no one, including Trump, can appear on the ballot if they donβt meet constitutional requirements.
Last nightβs SOTU address showed that the delusion about a "third term" continues. While it might be Trumpβs dream, in California we live in the real world and respect the Constitution.

Great to meet with Stanfordβs CA Policy and Politics class today. We dug into the ins and outs of how Sacramento and the Capitol really work, talked legislative procedures, and discussed important issues like the budget, Care Court, and substance use disorder treatment.
Voter intimidation is not theoretical to me. I witnessed it firsthand at the polls in 1988 when bad actors tried to scare Latino voters away and influence an election.
Right now, our state is facing serious threats from the Trump administration, and we will not treat them as idle or abstract.
California has both the constitutional right and responsibility to run our own safe and secure elections, and we intend to do exactly that.

In California, we respect the Constitution and our democracy, even if the federal government fails to do so, and we will protect every eligible citizenβs right to cast a ballot freely and safely.

This measure has nothing to do with protecting fake or illegal votes. This is about safeguarding lawful voters from the kind of ruthless intimidation used by authoritarian regimes around the world to unlawfully influence elections.
The Trump administration is lying about ICE and its lawless actions targeting families and communities.
