Six of One - Myanmar Special The best places to find Burmese food in London, by MiMi Aye, David Jay Paw and Ned Sedgwick. Vittles WWW.VITTLESMAGAZINE.COM [With an image of a bowl of noodles]
I was very glad to be asked by @vittles.bsky.social to contribute to this weekendβs Six of One - Myanmar Special.
I did so for two main reasons

Fascinating essay on *why* some cultures are terrified of reheating rice and others just...do it every day.
The justification cycle - racialised thinking, call to science, appeal to long past and/or 'traditional' wisdom - seems universal for this sort of food story #histFood
Really enjoyed this rice-reheating odyssey from @vittles.bsky.social

I simply love to be able to commission essays like @luketurner.bsky.social piece on 'ratting' βΒ a perverse eating practice he developed working in restaurants at the turn of the millenium. Illustration by Antoine CossΓ©
In today's @vittles.bsky.social (free)

I've written about how my troubled relationship with food was helped by "ratting" β the decadent habit of restaurant staff scarfing customers' abandoned food, and one that gives a thrill in the domestic kitchen. The ratter, you see, is hornier than most...

For @vittles.bsky.social, I wrote about what happens food photography - a practice steeped in stagecraft - meets the synthetic horrors of AI images. Gorgeous original illustration by Ibrahim Rayintakath. www.vittlesmagazine.com/p/you-want-t...

"Beef Wellington is a dish designed to dazzle and comfort at once. It offered the perfect cover for Pattersonβs plan, dressing intent to kill in the flaky drapery of a culinary showstopper." βAaron Timms for @vittles.bsky.social

Perfect example of why I recommend @vittles.bsky.social to so many ppl. This kind of roving thoughtful exploration of the edges of a topic-historical/social connections you'd never make yourself-models the kind of piece I love to read (& ideally write) (also feeds my obsession w/Aus food TV MKR4Eva)
Fascinating @vittles.bsky.social on the murder by Beef Wellington in Oz: βWe donβt know whether Patterson is a fan of MasterChef, but all murders reflect culture back to itself." www.vittlesmagazine.com/p/death-by-d...
Wrote a bit about Bad Customers for @vittles.bsky.social! You need a paid sub I think but you should probably have one anyway open.substack.com/pub/vittles/...
In the past, in my experience, bad customers were mainly either drunk and entitled or else minor celebrities, the kind who have tasted just enough fame to be complete arseholes; Graham Linehan, for example, seemingly made a point of always coming in five minutes after lunch service had started and asking for breakfast while his companions ordered from the lunch menu. βTheyβd tell him to fuck off at McDonaldβs,β weβd mutter, but make him his bacon sandwich anyway. In fact, we would have told him to fuck off too (rather more politely) if he hadnβt been then-beloved sitcom writer Graham Linehan, years before his reinvention as extremely divorced transphobe. We should have realised.
Fantastic little vignette about Glinner from today's @vittles.bsky.social newsletter (I highly recommend subscribing btw, if you're in any way interested in food).
I was beyond excited when the author of the new biography of Gertrude Stein, Francesca Wade, said she'd like to write about Alice B. Toklas for @vittles.bsky.social β and her essay is out today! Illustration by Ella Bucknall.
