SIGNED Devious Dreams: Reimagining David Lynch's Mulholland Drive by John Thorne (Paperback, NEW)
Puzzling and elusive, David Lynch ’s Mulholland Drive (2001) refuses easy interpretation. Critics have said the film is “outside logical explanation,” that it lacks “any semblance of rationality,” tha...
Wherein @thornewip.bsky.social analyzes Mulholland Drive through "a study of production documents, shooting script, and original configuration as a TV pilot, and through analysis of David Lynch’s approach to editing, sound design, scene arrangement, and camera movement."

My sense is that the NYC jazz clubs are all going to stay open tonight but maybe close tomorrow.
Nasheet Waits and I will be there at Birdland Theater tonight, 7 and 9:30.
However, I told Buster Williams to stay off the roads (he drives in from New Jersey). Simón Willson will fill in.

I feel especially happy to see Charles McPherson and Buster Williams on this list, for they have not received an NEA Jazz Masters award—and they certainly deserve one.

Ethan Iverson at Birdland Theater
Next weekend, February 20-22, I’ll be downstairs at Birdland Theater with Buster Williams and Nasheet Waits.
I have a new rhythm changes piece, “Two Circles and a Square,” which seems appropriate for this ensemble...

FASCINATING to listen to short clips of trumpet solos and hear Wynton Marsalis ruminate on them. Jazz fans, this is worth your time.

Always interested to read Ethan's thoughts about the Marsalis effect, but this also includes an excellent writeup about "Jazz: The Experimenters," a 1965 TV program featuring Charles Mingus & Cecil Taylor, w/commentary from Ralph Ellison and Martin Williams.

Top notch 🎹 trio this 👇. Just fabulous in every way, down to the recording sound. 1989.
(Credit to the great @ethaniversonpiano.bsky.social for turning me onto some of this Cowell trio in one of his many insightful deep dives.)
