Yes! I thought the same with the cinematography and costumes, too. So rich.
There are not enough people talking about THE TESTAMENT OF ANN LEE. I thought this film was strikingly beautiful. Every shot a renaissance painting. And the performances were stellar! Plus the musical-esque quality of the storytelling was a bold swing that I adored. Who else has seen this? Thoughts?
Friends, writers, optimists, lend me your ears. If you have not yet seen RENTAL FAMILY, I urge you to. First time in a long time I felt hopeful leaving the cinema. A warm and genuine film. And we must protect Brenden Fraser at all costs.
What a heart warming movie, ELEANOR THE GREAT. Definitely check this one out for a stellar character study and remarkable raw emotions that run the gamut. Beautifully done and June Squibb is a delight.
You're always giving your all. π
Book Recommendation: @daynadirector.bsky.social has written an incredible and pop-off-the-page novelization of the '60s horror movie SPIDER BABY. What a weirdly awesome story told in an immersive and creepy way. Congrats, Dayna!
Background spider actor was fully on board for this photo. π·οΈ
Oh no, thank you! Love your podcast!
Book Recommendation: Want to time travel back to the summer of '82? This book covers the journeys of 8 genre movies to the screen. Highly, highly recommend!
And if that's not enough, check out the "Multiplex Overthruster" podcast with @okbjgm.bsky.social & @robogeek.bsky.social for tons more! π π¬
Book Recommendation: If you're a fan of SNL, or even if you're not, LORNE was an incredible BTS and biographical read. Bouncing back and forth in time for a full look at how the SNL sausage is made, this book was a feat. Highly recommend.
Then make sure you watch the "SATURDAY NIGHT" movie!
I finished reading James A. Michener's SPACE over the weekend, and I pulled out this quote.
"An age is called Dark not because the light fails to shine, but because people refuse to see it."
Published in 1982.
Iβm watching βThey Liveβ for the first time.
Ahem. π³
Youβre reading Sonny Boy?! Isnβt it wonderful??
No writer is a failure until they are dead. Full stop. A career in writing is built over decades. It's built like a house, brick by brick, book by book. Not published yet? Emphasis on YET. Book not selling? It's not selling YET. You're only done when you quit.
And I don't think you're ready to quit
I have the next three scenes figured out. Plan to chip away at them.
Book Recommendation: We lost a great cinematic master this last week. In honor of David Lynch, I highly recommend his half-autobiography/half-biography. One of the best books I've read on a director and written in a way only Lynch could do.
100%!
Book Recommendation: For the last of 2024, I highly recommend this breakdown of "what is scary" and "how does horror work." King breaks down dozens of films, TV shows, and novels to explain structure and what makes good horror. Yes, it's dated, but still relevant! Write on, folks!
Book Recommendation: This was an awesome dive into the romantic lives of the Stevensons & their extraordinary work. The traveled all over the world & seemed to live hundreds of lives apart & together. Their creative work was almost minor in comparison...almost. A lovely read for literature fans.
Following!!
Thank you for the shout out, Dayna! π
Book Recommendation: A fascinating & intimate look of the life that made the man. While there are some years that seem to be missing, Pacino delivers a moving, tender, & eye-opening recount on what drove him to be carefree but determined. Get the audiobook, if you can. It's read by Pacino himself.
Book Recommendation: If you love old Hollywood and reading about how movies are made, if you enjoy reading history, and if you want to find out about how Edna Ferber pissed off some Texans, this was a great read. A snapshot into the behind the scenes and impact from this fantastic film.
@allisonblock.bsky.social
Thank you, Phil!! π You are a stellar collaborator yourself!
Has anyone else seen Guy Pearce's "A Christmas Carol"? I love this dark adaptation and wondering who else has seen it!
Book recommendation: I absolutely recommended this to some, but let me recommend to all. This book is a chef's kiss homage and love letter to Shakespeare and his work. And Judi is a spark! Get the audiobook, if you can, she is hysterical reading herself. Her laugh and love of the man is infectious.
Book Recommendation! For anyone who loves reality TV (or doesn't and just loves Hollywood history), this book was awesome. From radio plays to today's... political climate, this was in-depth and behind-the-curtain exposing. Highly recommend.
One of my favorite rom coms!
