Hey! I'm your friendly neighborhood librarian. I like books of all kinds, but especially horror books. Scary movies, cats, plants, cooking and witchy stuff. Hit me up if you need some good book recommendations. (She/Her) #Booksky.

I read Itch by Gemma Amor. Holy body horror, Batman. This has folk horror, body horror, but man did it not work for me. Josie returns to her hometown and she finds a dead body in the woods. She spirals as she tries to solve the mystery. If bugs make you squeamish skip this one. πŸ’™πŸ“š #booksky πŸ©ΈπŸ“š

I read The Hong Kong Widow by Kristen Loesch. This was incredible! Historical gothic fiction set in Hong Kong 1953. Mei receives an invitation to participate in a seance competition in a crumbling manor. Something terrible happens decades later Mei must face what happened that night. πŸ’™πŸ“š #booksky πŸ©ΈπŸ“š

I'm more of a standalone girl. Having said that I do make an exception for a really good trilogy, but I always get anxious for how the author will finish the third book. By the way this photo is gorgeous! ✨

I read There is No Place for Us: Working and Homeless in America by Brian Goldstone. This was excellent. We follow five families in Atlanta for a three year span to look in depth at the reality of working and not being able to afford housing. Highly recommend this one. #booksky πŸ’™πŸ“š #nonfiction πŸ’‘πŸ“š

I read Bog Queen by Anna North. Historical fiction set in three voices: Agnes- forensic anthropologist, sentient moss and an Iron age druid. Agnes finds the body in the moss and is on a quest to find out how she died. This was a cool concept but I ended up wanting more from each POV. #booksky πŸ’™πŸ“š

I read Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler, late to the party, I know. I love Butler's narrative voice. Set in 2024-2030 society has collpased and Lauren Olamina has to figure out a new path by going north. Butler manages to infuse hope into her dystopia and care. I highly recommend! #booksky πŸ’™πŸ“š

I read How to Survive a Horror Story by Mallory Arnold. Seven authors are invited to a manor to hear the will of a fellow horror writer who has died. But then the house becomes a trap and they have to solve riddles to escape or die. This was fun but..it just didn't quite work for me. #bookskyπŸ“šπŸ’™πŸ©ΈπŸ“š

I read Why I love Horror: Essays on Horror Literature. Becky Spratford edited essays from different horror authors each giving an essay on why they love and write horror. I finished a book for book club yesterday which is different for me. The Summer Book by Tove Jansson. Translated from Finnish it was written in 1972 about Sophie who is six and her grandmother having adventures on an island the summer after Sophie's mother dies. Nostalgic, sad, charming. #bookskyπŸ’™πŸ“š

Yesterday I finished a charming nonfiction book: Raising Hare by Chloe Dalton. This is about a woman in the English countryside who finds a baby hare, takes it home to raise it and her reflections on nature and the hare. It is pastoral, poetic language and I highly recommend this one. πŸ’‘πŸ“š #booksky

So I've read a few books lately that I didn't love, normally I DNF them but these two I finished. And to be honest I can't decide if I should review them or keep it positive reviews only? Thoughts? Also, here are my cats to make up for the lack of posting. They are sisters and littermates.

I read Thirteen Storeys by Jonathan Sims. An interesting take on a haunted apartment complex. 13 people being haunted, each chapter is their story until we reach the finale when they all come together. Ghosts, locked room murder, the building is a character too. I recommend! #booksky πŸ’™πŸ“šπŸ©ΈπŸ“š

I read this one on audiobook, Wylding Hall by Elizabeth Hand. A British folk band in the 70's rents a gothic manor house in the countryside to record their sophomore album. Years later they are interviewed about what happened that summer, who was that girl? This one was fun! πŸ’™πŸ“š #booksky πŸ©ΈπŸ“š

Yesterday I finished Overgrowth by Mira Grant. Overgrowth is an alien invasion story from the perspective of the alien, a character study on human behavior. This was fun, not as scary as her book Into the Drowning Deep (mermaid horror) but I really liked the aliens and I recommend it. πŸ’™πŸ“šπŸ©ΈπŸ“š #booksky
