A Buff-tailed bumblebee queen has landed on your feed! It has taken her over six months to reach you. Having hibernated alone in the soil, she will now spend her first days above ground resting to recover her strength, searching for a suitable nest site, and feeding on new flowers.

Scotland and Wales have brought in important new laws that aim to protect wildlife and help nature recover. These changes could be a big step forward for the recovery of bumblebees, other pollinators, and the many species that urgently need better protection.

Digging up peat to sell as garden compost is bad for bumblebees, it releases centuries of stored COโ‚‚ and destroys habitats โ€“ and more than 16,700 people have shown they care. Time for the Government to deliver on its promise and #endpeatsales, once and for all.

Shhh! Can you hear this Buff-tailed bumblebee queen's wings vibrating together? ๐Ÿ‘‘๐ŸŽถ

She may have recently emerged from hibernation to bask on the mossy bank as she is too cold to fly. Bumblebees can raise their body temperature by dislocating their wings and shivering their flight muscles.

If you ever worry about bumblebees in cold weather, just remember:
๐ŸงฅThey are covered in thick fur.
๐ŸŒก๏ธThey can raise their body temperature by dislocating their wings and shivering their flight muscles.
โ„๏ธTheir body can produce an antifreeze to stop ice crystals from forming and freezing their insides.

This month look out for early emerging Tree bumblebees ๐Ÿ‘€

Tree bumblebee queens can be seen during some winter months, but this species is more noticable in the summer when males fly around nest entrances, waiting to mate with new queens as they emerge๐Ÿงก

Have you seen your first bumblebee of 2026?
