Wait, youβre saying that people carry books around not with the intention of reading them, but as a prop to hook up?
Opting to send out rejections for grant proposals on the day before Thanksgiving is just peak academia. Truly!
And here I thought I was the only one such a thing could happen to! π
THIS! During @drannd.bsky.social 's #literacies chat last month, @profconnors.bsky.social asked about the lack of student voice (broadly) in a lot of censorship conversations, and now I see it EVERYWHERE. Really excited for the upcoming work Dr. David teased on this!
I just looked at the piles of books that have built up all over and realized that the only separating my house from a used book store is me throwing the front door open and welcoming in customers.

Remember when...
We considered all things Space, Place, and #literacies way back in November 2014?
How might your answers to these questions look today?
Iβm looking forward to attending the #literacies homecoming.
As in dressed for a duel?
This is exactly the mindset Iβm taking as well. Iβm not sure people understand that thereβs no returning to the the status quo. In the meantime, we just have to keep doing the work and fighting the good fight. Thanks again for the chat tonight. It was definitely cathartic.
I agree with 100%. Iβve not experienced anything quite like what Iβm seeing in my career. The damage thatβs being inflicted on education at all levels is frightening.
This is a hard one. As the US is not a signatory to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, and several states have had court cases that do not guarantee a right to an education--or a right to literacy--the short answer is no. They do, though, retain free speech rights in schools. #literacies
Thank you for hosting this #literacies chat. Iβm grateful for the opportunity to have discussed this important topic with all of you.

Same, Lexi! Aetornormativity is an issue that needs to be acknowledged and accounted for more often in discussions about book banning. #literacies
This strikes a chord, Mary.
As a follow up to my previous post, itβs interesting to me that the question of whether children and teenagers have rightsβincluding to education books
βis invariably glossed over. #literacies
In one instance, administrators at a local high school required that English teachers use only the district approved textbook. Beyond that, theyβre not permitted to bring in stand alone works of fiction or allow for student choice reading.

Reading this question, I couldnβt help but think of the the emphasis political operatives and think tanks place on βparental rightsβ and βparental choice.β This ideology is evident in arguments for school vouchers as well as efforts to remove books from libraries and classrooms.
Weβve experienced this in Arkansas. Due to concern about the potential for challenges, some teachers are electing to remove any books that could elicit pushback from parents-and in some cases, other teachers. #literacies
The only time Iβve experienced censorship on a larger scale involved a parent who sought to remove a play from our high school literature curriculum that she objected to. Initially, school administrators complied, but they reversed course due to pressure from the department.
Thank you! Iβm excited for the chat. I havenβt participated in one of these since Rocket Man drove me off the platform formerly known as Twitter.
Hi all! My name is Sean Connors, and Iβm an associate professor at the University of Arkansas. #literacies
Iβm assuming you differentiated between unexcused, excused, and absences due to rapture in the course syllabus, so youβre probably fine.
In the 1980s, John Nerone characterized debates about literacy as being steeped in βa sense of the apocalypse.β The more things changeβ¦
