Man I never really felt like my job was *hard* before starting Avantcore. Taxing, emotionally draining, self-toxic, sure, but never hard. My job is fucking *hard* these days. I'm up to the task, but damn, I never thought I'd be learning *this much* just from switching to a dramatic focus

Mechanical complexity is a tool to be wielded responsibly, not a hazard to be avoided. TTRPGs with very freeform, sparse rulesets are not good teaching tools for players new to the medium. Mechanical idiosyncrasy is not the work of Satan.

And D&D 5E is not the WORST system to start out with.

I sat in with my brother and his friends watching a random episode and I felt like I was watching a fake anime that plays on a screen in a cartoon or something but with professional level production values. I might have been more charitable if I hadn't already been annoyed seeing it on webtoons.

Couldn't sleep. Rolled credits on Unbeatable. It's not my first time through.

Honestly I think this is more than just my game of the year. It's affecting me more than... it's up there with Transistor. There are not many games with that grip on me. It's arguably in the "top games ever" list for me.

I lost my mind when I heard Proper Rhythm again, and at such a pivotal moment (and then the next Act made me cry once we got to The Voice Note, like, not tear up but like had to put the game down and properly sob). Legit would not change a thing about it!

Straight up burst into tears sobbing at The Voice Note, I dunno what I was expecting but it was not to break down like that nor for the game to provide anything heavy enough for me to break down over. It was great (even without the breakdown stuff)

Recently finished Unbeatable (beyond excellent game) and went in with almost no knowledge of the story, watched no let's plays, nothing, so I was... Unequipped for the final chapter, nor the emotional devastation of Beat and Quaver's pasts to be so Directly Applicable to recent events in my life...

When it comes to projects like this, there's often a temptation to go "Oh, she's boosting it out of politeness or solidarity" and I want to say that first off, if I share a project, it's because I want it to succeed at minimum; it's some level of endorsement. But here? I'm ALL in, ferociously.

I know right? I told them as much. I told them that even the mechanics are going off an assumption that you know what they're going for. That Honour, Gaba, and Debt break outside of their context. To at LEAST try a oneshot as is first. The Disciplines progression and Abilities break. On deaf ears.

I'm way more selective with who I play with these days as a result but it really just annoyed me how much that kept happening. Even like really light D&D homebrew with random Chewa myths I threw in just bounced off of those old groups and I was like "OK I'll add more elves to a game I don't like..."

The DM wasn't literally turning up their nose because there are brown people, and was also Black even, but functionally! And that just made me feel even more defeated because like Of Course everything that's weird for an American audience is the stuff pulled out, what did I expect. Felt bad.
