Heartbroken by the passing of dear friend and colleague Alan Young. Alan saw paths to justice before the rest of us and pursued them with vigour and wit. Remembering many laughs. A huge legacy. He gave so much to all of us who had the privilege of working with him.

This post brought back very bad memories from my PhD fieldwork at the Immigration and Refugee Board. Sponsorship Appeal hearings on "fake marriage" cases usually made me feel sick on how racism and misogyny were an usual systemic bias among visa officers, but sometimes also at the tribunal.

People should be looking to the legal framework governing security around the 2024 G20 Summit in Rio (Nov 18-19)... As usual, a special legal regime is already in place and this one is valid only from Nov 14 to 21, but its consequences may be longer.
