The bans make sense if there is an unspoken harm being considered - the continued, successful, existence of trans-people. That’s the unfortunate reality. :-(
There's another dynamic going on, which no one in the mainstream press I've seen has touched (though @polgreen.bsky.social got closest), and that's the fact that it is unprecedented to ban or heavily restrict a treatment on the basis that the evidence isn't high quality enough.

I was a very effeminate little kid and absolutely nobody tried to get me to transition, they just tried to get me to be More Manly. It's an entirely imaginary problem created from whole cloth by bigots.
I wish some major media outlets would do broad reports on the impact of death threats on our politics, and on who's doing them (MAGA men mostly from what I can tell), and why law enforcement appears to be doing so little about them. They are such a big (submerged) part of our politics now.
What's scary about this story is the surveillance it hints at. This trans woman had changed her name, legally, but chose not to change her gender marker. She was apparently flagged in the DMV system as trans and her license was invalidated under a law that supposedly only concerned gender markers.

When clinics started putting out research that 97.5% of trans youth who socially transitioned maintained a stable gender identity for 5 years,the reaction was never going to be, "I guess this isn't a phase." It was always going to be to ban social transition.

I don't think people's problem with, for example, the paper's decade-long crusade putting a big ol' target on trans people's backs can be accurately described as NYT doing "reporting that doesn't always 100% accord with what advocacy groups want."
The pipeline from "this makes me uncomfy" to "this is not allowed to exist" is dangerous and REAL. There is value in sitting with discomfort and confronting/unpacking your own biases. People are so afraid of their own "icky" feelings that they would destroy art and other people to remain "safe."
This absolutely leads into a larger conversation surrounding this pervasive inability to tolerate discomfort that leads many people to demand that art be defanged, censored, or otherwise eradicated to cater to their sensibilities. First it's art, then it's real people who are not allowed to exist.
I think too many people are too comfortable with demanding that others monitor and cater to their own discomfort. Your unhealed trauma and personal discomfort, especially regarding others' bodies, is for you to sit with and unpack, not for others to censor themselves and their own personhoods for.
