Why your prompts could be subpoenaed. My conversation with Meredith Whittaker, president of Signal, out today. links.profgmedia.com/4ucFCOy
You may look at a problem and think "Aha! The solution is to run my own email server." Now you have two problems, Google is marking all of your email as spam, an unknown number of threat actors using your server to spread malware because you forgot to patch something, and a small pile of subpoenas.
God thatโsโฆ so depressing
โIf [wealthy, powerful people] can get us to accept that the futureโs already settled, AI is already here, the end is already here, then we will create that for them. My most daring idea is to refuse.โ โ @tressiemcphd.bsky.social
These are the same people who chose to forgo the Oxford comma, soโฆ
And also that everyone in charge of pushing this technology has a bunker for when it all goes to shit.
Dubai police are threatening jail time for "any content that contradicts official announcements."
Soโฆ like a protection racket. Am I reading that right?
If you're following the situation in Iran, this one is of interest to you.
We can prove how the regime in Iran is using facial recognition software to surveil its citizens.

All I can think about is Jeff Bezos saying that he slashed jobs at the Washington Post โ including those of foreign correspondents in the Middle East โ based on "the data," and a few weeks later a whole war breaks out in the Middle East that these laid off folks would have covered as true experts.
New from 404 Media: CBP tapped into the online advertising ecosystem to track peoples' movements, according to an internal DHS document. Shows for the first time DHS tracked phones via process for putting ads in ordinary appsโvideo games, fitness apps, many more www.404media.co/cbp-tapped-i...

Excited to see this as I talk with fellow laid off writers and ponder launching a freelance collaborative for us to funnel contracts through, you know, so we can eat.

Can I come too??? Iโve given a couple versions of this over the years, now that I think about it. Maybe we can all exchange notes on why we think no one has listened to us yet ๐
Dear world, I am not at #Pride, bc Iโm busy getting ready for my big fat bisexual wedding ๐๐๐
In disordered discourse:
Engagement > accuracy
Performance > governance
Emotion > evidence
Identity = target
The logic of the algorithm now structures political speech. It rewards those who dramatise difference and punish deviation from the tribe.
DOGE bros donโt do careful or thorough, so everything is just a mess of errors. The chaos is a feature for them. Itโs not about efficiency. Itโs about destruction.
I do believe that eugenics is the key to this moment & am even drafting something with a friend about how everything weโre seeing them do today comes down to the idea that everyone else should be in service of the perfect white man they imagine themselves to be
I think thatโs it for me for now. If youโre around, come find me- purple curly hair, jeans, prolly around for the next few hours at least. If youโre not, and you made it this far in the thread, hope you found it helpful. โ๐ผ
I loved his comment โfirst to secure/secure to market vs first to marketโ (or whatever it was I said he said earlier in the thread. I wonโt apologize; Iโm tired.) bc yeahโฆ we keep fuckin around and we keep finding outโฆ sigh
I think he did a good job of stating explicitly that his comments re: administrationS were not specific to the current one; he wasnโt being political, he was talking about the decades-long reality weโve been facing as a nation that wonโt commit to doing the hard thing(s): that is, incentivizing sec
- I *loved* his comments re liability(similar to Bidenโs Natโl cyber strategy a few yrs ago) but ooOooo girl was some of it ๐ถ๏ธ๐ถ๏ธ๐ถ๏ธ: specifically holding *developers* liable.
I donโt necessarily disagree, but itโll need to be done carefully/with intention & attention to OSS ecosystem cc @aeva.online
Specifically investing in defensive capabilities at scale, bc I 100% agree with Coker on his comments re: who is protecting SLTT, bc they donโt have the resources- $, people, skill, etc- to protect themselves.
My 2 cents: generally good talk, little disorganized but maybe I havenโt had enough โ๏ธ
- great to hear #realtalk on #cyberwar re: #PRC. As others have been saying re PRC & #RUS โgrey zone/hybrid warfare,โ itโs ๐๐ผstill๐๐ผwarfare๐๐ผ
Maybe if we called it that, weโd do more about it (besides the โtrade warโ)
Wrapping with RGB quote: real change, enduring change, happens one step at a time.
โWe need to start taking steps.โ

Wasnโt able to thread this part properly, but Coker also oft mentioned the national debt, likened to cyber risk in that itโs a problem affecting us all no one is tackling head on
Coker says this is a good point and a challenge, maybe we ought to expand the 5eyes concept in cyberspace.
Need to build trust in our info sharing < my words
We talk to our allies about โthe western tech stack;โ our allies have thrown back, โWe canโt trust you; how do we know you havenโt put some American Magic in those stacks?โ Coker says, โYep, thatโs a good point.โ
