The most moving part of the film for me is Valerie’s letter, found by protagonist V hidden in a crack of his cell wall while he was incarcerated in a detention centre. Its lesbian author tells her life story from the adjacent cell after being abducted by the regime.

The 2005 adaptation V For Vendetta is set in an alternate reality Britain ruled by a fascist dictatorship, so perhaps it was the frightening parallels between that regime and the one currently subverting democracy in America that told me it was time to watch this again.
