Sam's Advent Calendar of Awesome People!
Everyday until Christmas, I'm going to highlight someone I think deserves your love and appreciation!
Its Day 2, so let's do two folks as I was busy yesterday!
Let me introduce you to @drtalksalot.bsky.social & @sciwithrach.bsky.social
Unfortunately I have a zero tolerance policy for people who shill Harry Potter products and content. After everything, your allegiance to nostalgia still outweighs your allegiance to trans+ people? Sorry not sorry.
I will have to drag my northern in laws over to the Manchester transport museum : ))
Desperately jealous of locals who can take FREE HERITAGE BUS RIDES!
Anybody wanna show me some diatoms? Really itching to look at diatoms
A group of people from Black, Asian, Arab and other racially marginalised background gathered together, smiling and posing for the camera, in a foyer with blue walls
Are you...
- From a racially marginalised background?

Also little homie still has BOTH antennae which is crazy impressive for a guy collected in 1888
I LOVE THESE. Let me add this adorable orange tip that was digitized during the iCollections project. Here they are! And here's "A History of Shropshire" which features a snippet about this exact specimen. Famous!
Also may post about burnout recovery on here. Working at a big national museum is perhaps the greatest thing that's ever happened to me, but because I feel so lucky and grateful I have pushed myself too far. (Multiple times, habitually.)
And folks, no job is worth your life.
Small brown elephant hawkmoth caterpillar with its head raised, sitting on a green, leafy plant with purple flowers. Maybe a willowherb?
Woah hello new followers! Welcome!
Right now I'm taking some time off work due to stress (π¬π€), but hopefully when I get back I'll have plenty of sick Leps to share with you all. To tide you over, here is a little elephant hawkmoth caterpillar I saw a couple months ago.
an ΓΌpdate
Embarrassingly, all opinions here are my own
When I get more followers I'll do an actual introduction post but until then just know I'm doing cool stuff at the NHM, and banging on the walls of the GMT time zone yearning to be awake when all my Americans are posting
I would like to speak up today for the trans community.
You see, I know a bit of what itβs like to be politically scapegoated. When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941, suddenly anyone in America who had any amount of Japanese ancestry became suspect. Politicians preyed upon ignorance and fear. /1
ALT text copied and pasted from the linked website: An infographic titled βHow To Write Alt Textβ featuring a photo of a capybara. Parts of alt text are divided by color, including identify who, expression, description, colour, and interesting features. The finished description reads βA capybara looking relaxed in a hot spa. Yellow yuzu fruits are floating in the water, and one is balanced on the top of the capybaraβs head.β
Posting this again because a lot of people said they found it helpful! Guide to ALT text: www.perkins.org/resource/how...
And obligatory man with dogs post
No luck with the slime moulds but plenty of fungus about. Highlights:
On the hunt for slime moulds this morning in Huddersfield! Will report back if we are successful
Switching back to twitter does feel a bit like exiting the restaurant to start dumpster diving

hey everyone! i made a list of some useful starter packs (primarily biology/earth sciences with a few bonus things thrown in) to share with friends who have joined bsky in the last week and thought it may be useful for some people here too! ππ§ͺ #SciSky #BioSky docs.google.com/document/d/1...
Just arrived! Can I join the list? Paying the lep tax for your services:
Some collectors used to run experiments on cocoons by exposing them to high heat or cold to create interesting colour morphs. But these interesting little fellows? They're a little different from their peers, but perfectly natural. Happy Trans Awareness week π³οΈββ§οΈπ€π©·π©΅
Well, thanks to the Biodiversity Heritage Library, here's the original publication, free for us to read. I was quite surprised to find that these aberrations may be naturally occurring.
Mostly red cinnabar moth from Dorset, bred by Watson
Mostly orange-red cinnabar from Dorset, bred by Watson
Mostly red cinnabar bred by Watson, some of the typical pattern is visible
Enter: Bizarre cinnabar moth aberrations. These guys are almost entirely red or peach, perfect for making a trans flag out of leps! Most aberrations are nonsense, so I was very curious about these here, as they are all from RW Watson's collection. Surely he published these?
