This will really impact the HE sector in Scotland (and rUK) and I hope it will address the issues that we are all struggling with. One already slightly depressing note though is how β€˜education’ is treated as synonymous with β€˜skills’ here. Unfortunate legacy of Scottish education reforms

Happy for the English Greens, but worth remembering that our experience of the Greens in actual government in Scotland was - not good. So hold them to their promises.

Btw, I have been to Denton but not Gorton and used to live in Longsight so am more qualified as a local candidate than Matt Goodwin

The only alternative would have been to furlough all university staff and just not have higher education for a couple of years. Imagine the response to that!

Long overlooked, Soviet Jewish stories written after the Holocaust emerge in new translation - Jewish Telegraphic Agency The writer Sasha Vasilyuk interviews the translators behind "In The Shadow of the Holocaust."

Good interview with @returnstosender.bsky.social on translating Yiddish and Russian-language Soviet Holocaust literature into English, and the impossibility of escaping contemporary historical resonances. www.jta.org/2026/02/20/i...

More author/translator sessions like this, please. I’ve been to book festival talks with famous authors who talk about language etc without even mentioning their translator, let alone discussing the process

Jointly with the Chair of W+IGS and the President of the GLA, the President of the AGS, @pdavies.bsky.social, has sent a letter to the Principal of Heriot-Watt University opposing proposed staff cuts to the Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies and threats to close German and Chinese.

I find this world of political communication incomprehensible - when Labour increase spending on benefits they spin it as a cut, but when the Scottish govt makes cuts to spending that are a bit less than they had projected, they spin it as an increase. It’s very confusing

Small point maybe, but from a translation point of view - interesting how the subtitles correct Healey’s words about β€šRussia’ fighting Germany in WW2 to the β€šUSSR’ (which is what he should have said)
