Starmer not prepared to join a war β€˜without lawful basis and viable plan’, he tells PMQs – UK politics live PM says country must act β€˜with clarity, with purpose and with a cool head’ amid Middle East crisis and Trump criticism

"The sprint to clean energy is the only way to get off the volatile international fossil fuels markets, cut bills & deliver energy security"

Fair play to Starmer - this is exactly right. Meanwhile, Badenoch & Farage would have us hooked on more fossil fuels

Markets latest: Gas price soars 93% since start of conflict Drone strikes across the Middle East and Iran's effective closure of a key shipping route are spooking investors and traders. Follow the latest on the global markets.

This is a good moment for Europe & UK to remember that they can stick up wind and solar, insulates houses, far quicker than they can find new gas in e.g. North Sea

If you're chasing more gas, it's now a case of which unreliable regime you prefer to depend on

β€˜Magic beneath the surface’: pioneering geothermal plant launched in Cornwall A new mini power station and lithium extraction facility near Redruth are set to bolster green energy and create jobs Just outside the perimeter fence stand the hulking remains of grand stone engine houses, a testament to Cornwall’s proud tin and copper mining history. But inside is a shiny new mini power station and lithium extraction plant that is once again accessing rich underground resources in the far south-west of Britain. Continue reading...

Energy bills to fall in April in price cap change and charges shake-up Changes announced in the Budget mean all energy bills will see some kind of reduction, but it will vary.

Today's news that the price cap is falling is very welcome - providing much needed cost-of-living support for families across the country. This has been the biggest drop since last summer - and there's still further to go as we progress towards Clean Power 2030.

Grant boost to cover almost half the cost of installing EV chargers for households and businesses Flat owners, landlords, renters and businesses will be able to get grants of up to Β£500 per charge point.

Great to see this from the government. Making it easier & more affordable for renters, flat owners & those without driveways access cheaper home charging is critical for making the transition more accessible to everyone.

Proud to show our city leading the way… AGAIN! πŸ’šπŸ›³οΈ πŸ™ŒπŸΎ

Great to join Labour Climate and Environment Forum and ABP last week, to see first-hand the incredible work being done to clean up our port.

It’s supported by the Government’s recent Β£500m investment, to make ports sustainable and future ready.

But it's key that ports like Southampton modernise at pace to continue maintaining and creating good, high-skilled jobs and ensure it remains one of the most important ports in Europe and a major contributor to the UK economy.

Scaling up shore power by unlocking investment & removing grid capacity issues will be key, as will scaling up clean shipping fuels. It's great that the govt is progressing some of the policy in this area through its Maritime Decarb Strategy with investment going in to tackling these challenges.

24.02.2026 15:37 πŸ‘ 2 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Modernising & electrifying the port is critical to its future. Encouraging that Southampton was a UK first-mover on commercial-scale shore power to reduce emissions from ships while berthed & is making good progress on shifting freight from road to rail. But there's a lot more to do.

24.02.2026 15:37 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Growing up in the area, it's always been clear the central role the port plays in Southampton's social, economic and industrial past & present; something locals are proud of. But it's also been a major source of pollution & congestion that creates challenges & tensions with local communities.

Great @lcefuk.bsky.social day out in my neck of the woods with @laboursatvir.bsky.social & Associated British Ports last week to visit the Port of Southampton. Really interesting discussions on the industrial heritage of the city & the role of govt & industry in modernising & decarbonising ports.

A short 🧡

This is a really good article & shows the challenge MPs face.

I received over 2,000 emails last month in our casework system; this covers 'campaign emails', personalised emails (often asking for my view on something) and people getting in touch who needing my team's support.

Today, Labour is launching the Local Power Plan, the biggest public investment in community energy projects in our history.

For years these projects have faced barriers with little support from Whitehall, but today’s announcement means that reality is no longer.

It's critical that we raise the voices of councillors in this debate & help raise salience of this issue once again. Air pollution is a major health & social justice issue - bread-&-butter for the labour movement. Time to move the dial on the politics of this issue.

Cllrs are on the front lines of delivery to help us breathe cleaner air, but are doing so with constrained powers, resources & political cover. While some v positive things are happening in govt that will help tackle air pollution nationally, cllrs need to be compelled & empowered to go further.

I was pleased to be at the Labour Local Government Conference yesterday, hosting a panel with 3 inspiring cllrs from Brighton, York & Lambeth who are passionate about delivering cleaner air for their communities, from school streets & quieter neighbourhoods to tackling pollution from wood burning.

Bright-eyed at day two of Labour LGA conference to discuss how we win the politics of air quality.

How do we enpower the voices of those cllrs across the country who are delivering on this issue for their communities.

'For the energy transition to work, it must deliver good union jobs, not just clean power' - LabourList As Labour accelerates offshore wind, it must ensure the transition creates good, unionised jobs in the communities that need them most β€” or risk losing public support for clean energy.

Was pleased to join the launch of Climate Jobs UK this week, calling, in the words of Gary Smith, for the just transition to be a jobs transition.

The introduction of a Fair Work Charter for the next round of off-shore wind is a strong step on this journey.

Project aiming to return elk to UK moves forward Work to assess the feasibility of bringing the species back to the UK is under way.

The reintroduction of beavers to London has been a huge success.

The prospect of elk returning to Britain shows what’s possible when we give nature the space and support it needs.

We're deeply saddened by the passing of Councillor Waseem Zaffar. His commitment to clean air + public health - introducing Birmingham's Clean Air Zone to founding the Clean Air Justice Network (later Birmingham HAC) - leaves a lasting legacy that continues to inspire our fight for clean air πŸ’™

The Warm Homes Plan is a genuinely exciting & defining moment for this Govt. It will tackle fuel poverty & living costs, while cutting emissions & boosting energy security. Great to be joined by the Minister for a productive discussion with MPs on how the plan will be delivered nationally & locally.

NEW #carspreading danger: @cleancitiescampaign.org analysis reveals a 92% rise in number of US-style pick-up trucks on UK roads. We've now more than half a million pick-up trucks where young children can’t be seen over high bonnet ⚠️ 1/7

Carmakers have been very effective at marketing larger, higher margin vehicles in recent years. The result?

⬆️ Danger to vulnerable road users
⬆️ Road wear
⬆️ Health impacts from air pollution
⬆️ Emissions

⬇️ Space in urban areas for people
⬇️ Resource use efficiency

This trend hurts us all.

Number of US-style β€˜battering ram’ pickup trucks on UK roads has nearly doubled in a decade Exclusive: Campaigners say β€˜menacing vehicles’ are putting children at risk owing to their large front blind zones

Important analysis by @cleancitiescampaign.org on the rise of US-style pickups in the UK. There isn't a sudden need for these vehicles; this is a lifestyle choice. Large pickups are more dangerous, more polluting & have no place in urban areas.

Agreed, that's an important caveat. The problem is where they're being used in urban/built up areas

A more serious approach to pollution from wood burning has been long overdue. Building greater public awareness & strengthening pollution limits is a good step. It would be good to also see greater support & powers for councils to properly enforce restrictions on wood burning in smoke control areas.
