Starmer not prepared to join a war βwithout lawful basis and viable planβ, he tells PMQs β UK politics live
PM says country must act βwith clarity, with purpose and with a cool headβ amid Middle East crisis and Trump criticism
"The sprint to clean energy is the only way to get off the volatile international fossil fuels markets, cut bills & deliver energy security"
Fair play to Starmer - this is exactly right. Meanwhile, Badenoch & Farage would have us hooked on more fossil fuels

Markets latest: Gas price soars 93% since start of conflict
Drone strikes across the Middle East and Iran's effective closure of a key shipping route are spooking investors and traders. Follow the latest on the global markets.
This is a good moment for Europe & UK to remember that they can stick up wind and solar, insulates houses, far quicker than they can find new gas in e.g. North Sea
If you're chasing more gas, it's now a case of which unreliable regime you prefer to depend on

Energy bills to fall in April in price cap change and charges shake-up
Changes announced in the Budget mean all energy bills will see some kind of reduction, but it will vary.
Today's news that the price cap is falling is very welcome - providing much needed cost-of-living support for families across the country. This has been the biggest drop since last summer - and there's still further to go as we progress towards Clean Power 2030.

Grant boost to cover almost half the cost of installing EV chargers for households and businesses
Flat owners, landlords, renters and businesses will be able to get grants of up to Β£500 per charge point.
Great to see this from the government. Making it easier & more affordable for renters, flat owners & those without driveways access cheaper home charging is critical for making the transition more accessible to everyone.

Great to join Labour Climate and Environment Forum and ABP last week, to see first-hand the incredible work being done to clean up our port.

Scaling up shore power by unlocking investment & removing grid capacity issues will be key, as will scaling up clean shipping fuels. It's great that the govt is progressing some of the policy in this area through its Maritime Decarb Strategy with investment going in to tackling these challenges.

Modernising & electrifying the port is critical to its future. Encouraging that Southampton was a UK first-mover on commercial-scale shore power to reduce emissions from ships while berthed & is making good progress on shifting freight from road to rail. But there's a lot more to do.

Growing up in the area, it's always been clear the central role the port plays in Southampton's social, economic and industrial past & present; something locals are proud of. But it's also been a major source of pollution & congestion that creates challenges & tensions with local communities.

Great @lcefuk.bsky.social day out in my neck of the woods with @laboursatvir.bsky.social & Associated British Ports last week to visit the Port of Southampton. Really interesting discussions on the industrial heritage of the city & the role of govt & industry in modernising & decarbonising ports.

Today, Labour is launching the Local Power Plan, the biggest public investment in community energy projects in our history.
For years these projects have faced barriers with little support from Whitehall, but todayβs announcement means that reality is no longer.

It's critical that we raise the voices of councillors in this debate & help raise salience of this issue once again. Air pollution is a major health & social justice issue - bread-&-butter for the labour movement. Time to move the dial on the politics of this issue.

Cllrs are on the front lines of delivery to help us breathe cleaner air, but are doing so with constrained powers, resources & political cover. While some v positive things are happening in govt that will help tackle air pollution nationally, cllrs need to be compelled & empowered to go further.

Number of US-style βbattering ramβ pickup trucks on UK roads has nearly doubled in a decade
Exclusive: Campaigners say βmenacing vehiclesβ are putting children at risk owing to their large front blind zones
Important analysis by @cleancitiescampaign.org on the rise of US-style pickups in the UK. There isn't a sudden need for these vehicles; this is a lifestyle choice. Large pickups are more dangerous, more polluting & have no place in urban areas.

A more serious approach to pollution from wood burning has been long overdue. Building greater public awareness & strengthening pollution limits is a good step. It would be good to also see greater support & powers for councils to properly enforce restrictions on wood burning in smoke control areas.
