Great to join Labour Climate and Environment Forum and ABP last week, to see first-hand the incredible work being done to clean up our port.
It’s supported by the Government’s recent £500m investment, to make ports sustainable and future ready.
But it's key that ports like Southampton modernise at pace to continue maintaining and creating good, high-skilled jobs and ensure it remains one of the most important ports in Europe and a major contributor to the UK economy.
Scaling up shore power by unlocking investment & removing grid capacity issues will be key, as will scaling up clean shipping fuels. It's great that the govt is progressing some of the policy in this area through its Maritime Decarb Strategy with investment going in to tackling these challenges.
Modernising & electrifying the port is critical to its future. Encouraging that Southampton was a UK first-mover on commercial-scale shore power to reduce emissions from ships while berthed & is making good progress on shifting freight from road to rail. But there's a lot more to do.
Growing up in the area, it's always been clear the central role the port plays in Southampton's social, economic and industrial past & present; something locals are proud of. But it's also been a major source of pollution & congestion that creates challenges & tensions with local communities.

Cllrs are on the front lines of delivery to help us breathe cleaner air, but are doing so with constrained powers, resources & political cover. While some v positive things are happening in govt that will help tackle air pollution nationally, cllrs need to be compelled & empowered to go further.

Important analysis by @cleancitiescampaign.org on the rise of US-style pickups in the UK. There isn't a sudden need for these vehicles; this is a lifestyle choice. Large pickups are more dangerous, more polluting & have no place in urban areas.

Agreed, that's an important caveat. The problem is where they're being used in urban/built up areas
A more serious approach to pollution from wood burning has been long overdue. Building greater public awareness & strengthening pollution limits is a good step. It would be good to also see greater support & powers for councils to properly enforce restrictions on wood burning in smoke control areas.
